Player opinions have been strongly mixed on Final Fantasy XIV, something that hardly needs to be reiterated. Even the game's supporters have occasionally been a touch leery about paying for their first month of the game with the current state of polish. Which means that it should be good news for players all around that Square-Enix is extending the normal "free month" to encompass an additional month, placing early adopters out of the realm of billing until November.
Aimed primarily at purchasers of the collector's edition with its headstart, the extension will be credited to any and all accounts created before October 19th. Billing will be credited for another 30 days, giving a total of 60 days free time within the game world. The official announcement assured the community that the development team is listening to all the feedback received, and wishes to thank Final Fantasy XIV's players for their devotion to the game. Considering that the game has just seen its first pass of reorganization for the market system and a director dispatch on the game's future, it's a morning of good news for the game's players.

Why aimed to people that had the headstart? The deadline is october 25, meaning that even someone purchasing the game today would still get the extended 60 days.

OK, here's how it works:
FFXIV is that super-hot chick who is totally out of your league and a beautiful soul deep down, who for some reason asks you back to her place.
But when you get there, it turns out her idea of a good time is to beat the snot out of you and jam stuff up your rear. Now... for some folks, this is exactly what they've been looking for but couldn't find anywhere else, and she's the dominatrix of their dreams. Good for them. Others are uncomfortable with it, but put up with it because OMG no, seriously, she is that hot and a wonderful person when you get to know her. But if you aren't a masochist and don't want to have to grit your teeth and try not to cry when you're trying to get your rocks off, back away. Your colon will thank you.
Who knows... maybe one day in six or twelve months time she'll call you up to let you know the BDSM stuff was just a phase, and now she doesn't play like a bad PS3 port with dominance issues on how you spend your time. Until then, there are plenty of fish in the sea... who don't require you to come up with a safe-word.

Oh boy. This game sure is dominating me, making me grit my teeth and cry. For YOU it might be masochistic to play it, due to your own complexes or taste, but there's plenty of us (full servers actually) who can't wait to come home to get back to playing :]

True or not (I don't know, don't play FFXIV), that is seriously the best comment I've ever read on this site.
Well played, sir. I'd love to read more such "reviews" on all MMO's.

lol well put
Kudos to Square for doing a smart and decent thing to build goodwill. There have been a lot of abysmal MMO launches in recent years where this kind of thing should have happened, but didn't, so I have to give them credit.

So in essence, would a game like Warcraft be old wife.
Sure she was a bit unstable in the past, but now you've grown old together and you just gave up on expecting anything new and exciting, no sex, no more kids, just the same old same old day in and out and you're too lazy to find someone new and fresh, even if that new and fresh person is a bit unstable in the beginning, you're WAY too lazy to deal with a woman like that twice.
Is that good?

Sounds like my dream girl, lol.
Being a masochist is probably the reason I bought FFXIV over Starcraft II, Fallout New Vegas, and Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Ed, even though I knew FFXIV was going to be garbage.
Free month is nice and the FFXIVCore announcement of possible new classes that were datamined is pretty good news.
Playing a cool class like Samurai or Archanist is enough to make me buy a sub. Still waiting for any kind of news for Summoner though.

Lol, I just uninstalled FFXIV last night. Not going to bother putting it back on. It's too broken to fix in 60 days anyhow. Targeting, grinding crafting, no AH, no global chat, just a sloppy sloppy game.
Back to leveling more alts for Cataclysm. Tera is my one ray of hope. If Tera flops I'm just going to give up on MMORPGs and go back to fraggen people on MW2.

I am one of the masochist transientmind is talking about.
I think that today's actions by Square-Enix were probably one of the most important for me. They extended my play time, saving me money to play their "unfinished" product. Then they tell me exactly what their priorities are when they plan to have them fixed by.
To be honest, I had little faith in SE to even accept any of the issues in their game, much less fix them. Some of the logic in their game is obviously poor development issues that SE did not want to invest time in to resolve and figure out for their rushed release. I still have little faith in the developers for FFXIV. I can feel their pain to a degree because I am a software developer and understand what unreasonable deadlines can do to a peice of software but to me, it makes more sense to leave an unuseable feature completely out of the software than to put in a broken and annoying feature that people cant use anyway.
I think they are still in denial about their market ward system, but I dont care too much about that so I can let it slide.
All in all I'm very happy today and pleased with how SE is handling this rough release. I enjoy many aspects of the game but I dont think I can last as a long time player when the game is inconvient. Seeing how they are trying to resolve the inconvience, I dont feel as bad investing time and money into this company/game.

I was very disappointed by all that I've read of XIV. I was really rooting for the game to be superb. I've lost all interest in all of the MMOs I've been playing and have been playing FPS a lot as a late. I really needed a new world where it was so nice and so well made that I could just "live" in it. But alas, I guess it wasn't meant to be. I hope the PS3 version turns out stellar when it's released in March 2011. It certainly has plenty of time to improve.
I hope to God TERA is everything I've been waiting for.
