Tweet You may or may not be one of the people unhappy with Final Fantasy XIV in its current state. Certainly the game has both drawn its fair share of ire and praise, and it's hard to picture a launch with more strongly divided opinions. But even if you hate everything the game turned out to be, you have to admit that you can't make quite the spectacle that one unnamed Japanese player did -- a rage-fueled quit that involved selling off $26 million worth of Square-Enix stock as a parting gesture.
Square-Enix experienced a definite dip in stock value on the 7th, dropping from 1800 yen a share to 1735 a share before recovering later in the day. According to Japanese sources, this was preceded by a rather angry dispatch from a shareholder explaining that he was so disgusted by Final Fantasy XIV he no longer wanted any of the stock. While there is some debate as to the chain of events and their veracity, it would certainly make this event the ultimate response to the question of "can I have your stuff?"
[Thanks to Stormwaltz for the tip!]

With a metacritic score of 54/100 and a game that don't give players what they want that is not surprising. When you build the field, sometimes they don't come.

There is a vid on youtube of stockholders for a very popular game asking the ceo/speaker what an MMO is during a yearly report. Funny stuff.

You both seem to think you are standing up for Massively, but you're not doing them any favors when your basic arguments are a) they are not journalists and b) everyone else is doing it. I like Massively and think it is reasonable to ask them to behave like responsible journalists.

There are a few million players in WoW who I'd like to see leave. I don't even care if they take their millions in stock options with them.

Aron: you are trying to get yourself out of the embarrassing moment - you didnt read the title right and now you are pushing your own point and you want to go past the debate.
And you demand seriously dealing about issues? HAHAHAHAH
Btw, read the title: RUMOR! !!!!! R U M O R .... R U M O R ...
Meaning, if you want to post a RUMOR you can post it as RUMOR ... did they say it was a FACT? Where?
Shut the fuck up already and take it as a man. Being wrong makes you smart next time. Be thankful you were so fucking stupid now, because you can be a lot smarter later

woops, i changed my nickname to MindFever? See, this is also a "fail" moment

Here's the thing, MindFever. I like Massively and think that the site is (usually) an example of solid games journalism. I'm not calling them names or engaging in fanboy defensiveness about Final Fantasy XIV. I'm simply encouraging the editors and reporters to behave as responsible journalists. Not sure why you're interpreting this as a controversial fail.
In the comments thread, someone argued that it isn't a big deal that the editors reported the rumor because they clearly labeled it as a rumor. However, I would draw your attention to the short form of the headline appearing in the "hot stories" section at the top of the screen. The headline reads: "Epic $26 Million Final Fantasy XIV Ragequit." There is zero indication that this is a rumor.
It would be nice to hear some sort of response on this issue from the editors. In case they're reading this thread, my questions are: "1) Did you ever manage to locate the "odd post on the Internet" allegedly made by the angry shareholder, 2) Do you view yourselves as games journalists, and 3) If you are games journalists, do you think you have an ethical responsibility to substantiate rumors reported in your blog?"
I read this blog regularly, and I rarely miss the podcast. These are intended as friendly -- albeit pointed -- questions.

People have been claiming SE makes mediocre games since FFVI. But the majority thinks otherwise. That's why every game in the series has sold at least 1 million. With their biggest games selling 10 million.
FFXIII sold 4 million boxes. Alot of their old fans were turned off by no overworld map, lack of sidequest, the auto-battle feature, and the inability to visit old areas. They do tell good stories including XIII, but everyone has their own idea of which FF has the best story.
All the extra things we expect from the series got cut due to developing the crystal tools and the transition to next gen. Expect versus to deliver on gameplay.
I'm a fanboy of SE games, and I still enjoyed ever FF including XIII over XII. If they continue the usage of a license board or crystarium boards. They better make sure players can pick and choose what to learn and not follow some predefined path.
