Tweet You may or may not be one of the people unhappy with Final Fantasy XIV in its current state. Certainly the game has both drawn its fair share of ire and praise, and it's hard to picture a launch with more strongly divided opinions. But even if you hate everything the game turned out to be, you have to admit that you can't make quite the spectacle that one unnamed Japanese player did -- a rage-fueled quit that involved selling off $26 million worth of Square-Enix stock as a parting gesture.
Square-Enix experienced a definite dip in stock value on the 7th, dropping from 1800 yen a share to 1735 a share before recovering later in the day. According to Japanese sources, this was preceded by a rather angry dispatch from a shareholder explaining that he was so disgusted by Final Fantasy XIV he no longer wanted any of the stock. While there is some debate as to the chain of events and their veracity, it would certainly make this event the ultimate response to the question of "can I have your stuff?"

Well I hope that says something to them. Money is the only thing a game studio cares about in the end and SE just lost some because they could have done better. Maybe they will make it better now?

Is that why you named yourself an outdated system of damage calculation? because the companies just care about the money in the end?

Sold his stock option out of anger, or realized that Square Enix is flailing and has been releasing sub par games that relied largely on the name "Final Fantasy" to sell the last 3 or 4 titles?

There is a small difference between stock options and actual stocks.
The options are just options where as stock certificates actually imply partial ownership of a company.
But for $26 million dollars the man could finance the production of just about any video game he wanted, or just buy a lifetime subscription to WoW.
But the man would do well to invest a portion of that into konami via the TSE before the holiday rush.
Castlevania is going to be bigger there than it was here.
Though I believe that Koei Tecmo is going to be pretty big on the scene in the next two years.
Regardless of any of that, Square Enix needs to die in its current incarnation. (The company, not the people). Their values in game development and story telling are... not as good as they [Square Enix] think it is. It just astounds me that they can employ some of the best story tellers and artists of our generation and be so completely off the mark when it comes to good design choices.

So, is this true? do we have some actual information instead of hearsay? cause i'd really like to see the source on someone just dumping that many stocks at being pissed off. And more of source than "well this guy said this to that guy in the linkshell".

It's very much true. The source links are all up there in the comments above this one.

when they announce their remake of FFVII he'll be back they'll all be back :D

Have you seen what they've been doing to VII recently?
In the remake, you'll probably only have four party members: Cloud, Vincent, Tifa, and Aeris. The rest will be relegated to walk on roles in cutscenes, except Red XIII, who will get a mention maybe a quarter of the way in and than promptly never be spoken of again. Cloud will moan about his feelings the entire game and a bunch of leather clad she-men will literally cry about their disembodied mommy.
Yeah, even if it did happen, fans would probably hate it anyway.

And when Square Enix completely screws up the remake they will be gone again.
