You really need to differentiate between U.S.A and European Servers. They are handled by two different entities and events & item shop sales differ greatly between them. Typically, the European version of this game has a significantly better play experience. Perhaps this will be mitigated in the near future, given the U.S.A. company's recent firing of the CEO and VPs.

And how is this different to the 1000's of animals we slaughter for their bits in just about any MMO we play ?

Because it's based on something real. It would be like dog-fighting in a game.

Sure, a company can put that in a game but they shouldn't be surprised when someone finds it distasteful.
