Those of you excited by the prospect of EVE Online's impending Incarna expansion might want to check out the latest dev blog from CCP senior producer Torfi Frans Olafsson. Heck, even if you hate the idea of Incarna, you'll probably want to check it out since it heralds the first of some rather significant changes in the offing for the sci-fi MMORPG.
The change in question is the upcoming test-server release of the new character generator, and in addition to a couple of nifty screenshots, the blog features a hypothetical question-and-answer session that details several aspects of the new system. For starters, Olafsson reiterates the fact that Incarna is coming in 2011, and these character changes are merely the first step. He also notes that the changes are not optional and that the player portraits are some of the last remaining original art assets from the game's launch in 2003. "The assets we are replacing are some of the oldest in the game. Most of our avatars were built in 2001-2003. That's a very long time ago. Nokia banana phones were still considered cool and futuristic," he writes.
Olafsson also notes that CCP is sympathetic to those veteran players who may balk at the changes to their traditional portaits. That said, progress waits for no avatar, and it's clear that this is merely the first salvo in an upcoming onslaught of improvements and additions to the universe of New Eden.

Does that mean my achuran male will finally be able to be sexy like me in real life?
Or will they still be the most god awful ugly bloodline?

As soon as this goes Live, I may just return to EVE Online . . .

I vaguely recall telling CCP to go shove it in an email, when I quit for various reasons.
The new avatars look very nice and I guess the art/tech might be used in the other upcoming World of Darkness game. I wonder if they would let me play World of Darkness.

The new system looks really cool, but I'm dreading familiarizing myself with the dozens of new avatars in my channels.

Very much looking forward to seeing this hit Singularity (the test server) in the next few days.

I just crapped my pants. She looks amazing, such an improvement. Sadly though, this (along with Incarna later) is the only thing coming in the near future that interests me.

Incursion doesn't interest you at all? From the test server, it is pretty epic, and I think it will really push new players into forming up with people.

I know its the Internets so people complain about everything, but would people really complain about such an awesome upgrade to their character looks? I'm sure CCP will make it so you can create a very similar style of avatar to the existing ones... just better. How could that be bad?

For me it's awesome. The character portraits have looked dated for quite some time, and it's great that CCP is addressing this, and it's nice that they're doing it in Incursion and not waiting for Incarna six months or so later.
However, people will complain about everything. "Oh noez, my char has too many hairz in her eyebrowz."

The only 2 complaints I have as of right now is that when this feature launches you will not be able to have tattoos nor will you be able to adjust your character height. Females are inherently shorter than males, but there will be no way to adjust their height yourself.
That said, this expansion is going to make me very happy. I can't wait to find a group to go do Incursions with and the new Avatars are just icing on the cake!

If you read the devblog, they are trying to do away with appearance sliders. Changing your characters nose (among other things) is done quite literally by grabbing it and pulling on it.
Why hasn't anyone come up with this before??!
Aside from that bit of awesomeness, I am very much looking forward to changing my portrait. I thought it would be funny to make my character as ugly as possible. I was right at first, but now that I take the game a bit more seriously it kinda makes me cringe every time I see it.

if you're in to trying the character creator out, you can take it for a spin on singularity now. there's obviously some room for improvement; they're a couple months away from launch, but it's looking pretty good! there aren't too many clothing options at the moment either, but i imagine they wanted to get it up on singularity so that we could test for stability, not play dress up.
