I'm not looking for SWG 2. I'm looking for KOTOR3. I think Bioware will do well on that point...

The space battles? If they can make them half as fun as Starfox, I'm all for the tunnel type gameplay. Comparing the space battles to that game isn't a bad thing, in my mind. Starfox (and it's sequels) were fun.

You want KotOR3 but you also want fun space combat? Maybe you don't remember how bad the space combat was in the KotOR games. Sitting in a turret to shoot fighters for 5 min with awkward controls? No thanks. Give me SWG2 if it means the space combat is as good as it is in SWG.

I have a feeling people who think this is going to be SWG 2 are a tiny minority.

Not intended to offend but, how many times are we going to get the same story/news?

Until Bioware feels comfortable enough to start presenting official news about specific game mechanics and begins a more open and forward-facing testing strategy.

Anyone following this game, particularly right after con season, is doing their best to find interesting material to share with and engage the community. Until the release of The Force Unleashed 2 LucasArts, who for all intents and purposes controls a large portion of the marketing for SWTOR, will be focused almost exclusively on gaining buzz around the big console title. Once Novemeber rolls around, and with the recent announcement of Cataclysm's Dec. 7 launch date, you can bet there is going to be a strong stream of announcements from the team to keep the game fresh in everyone's mind.

In the meantime, editorial pieces like this one that explore some of the more meta aspects of the game are a great way to tide the community over.

There could be no greater failure than turning SW:TOR into a boring sandbox with nothing to do. Thankfully, there's basically no chance Bioware is stupid enough to do that.

I couldnt agree more, it still irks me/makes me feel sad when i see guilds advertising "SWG vets hardcore PK". I think they will be in for a shock :o

They most certainly will. Whereas SWG is still pretty sandboxy even with the 'classes', TOR seems like it's going to be the anti-sandbox game. Very linear where you're guided through like a haunted house. Has me worried to be honest.

I couldn't agree more, with this article.

I had great misgivings about Biowares space combat direction. I went to PAX Seattle and the majority of my time was spent at the TOR booth playing the available classes. I am absolutely sold on SWTOR. I also spoke at length with Daniel Erickson and any doubts I had were erased. Why? Because this guy gets it. Erickson is a visionary and SWTOR is his artwork.

I do miss the Koster inspired days of SWG but I'm ready for war in The Old Republic.

Actually no I don't want the space combat from KOTOR. But that wasn't even a big part of the game. As you can see from my comment, I said "If they are as fun as Starfox." See? I love the Starfox games so I don't think that is a bad comparison.

I never hit it off with SWG. But I am really looking forward to the old republic.

I got burned by the changes made to SWG all those years back and have never looked back. I am looking forward to what SWTOR will bring to the table and will reserve judgement on what's good or bad about Bioware's space combat, story telling, and mechanics until the day I create a character and log on for the first time.

Like it or not, there will be comparisons between the two Star Wars MMOs. It's just the nature of the beast, as I'm sure DCUO will be included in the mix when people make comparisons between the different super hero MMOs out there.

In regards to the two points brought up in the article, though, space just fell flat for me in part because of the hype that some are pumping into the game. I look at what's being offered by BioWare and then measure it up to what SWG already has and think, "That's the best BioWare can come up with?" This super-awesome, can-do-no-wrong company (in the eyes of some) decides that their space content is something that looks like I can get the same type of experience by popping in one of the Rogue Squadron games? Good games, mind you, but that's the path they are taking? Sorry to say, but it falls short of the hype.

As far as the "guided tour" notion, it's actually been one of my biggest red flags with the game. As pointed out, SWG launched focused on making the whole experience more sandbox-oriented, which caused content in the game to suffer greatly. That was a mistake, no doubt about it. But all BioWare seems to want to talk about is story and content. Not much else gets mentioned, and anything that IS mentioned doesn't have a whole lot of detail to it. Granted, it's what they hope will set their game apart, but it brings about worries that they're making the same kind of mistake that SWG made, concentrating on one aspect of the game to the detriment of other parts. I don't mind going along with content provided by developers, but the general impression I get from TOR is that they're saying, "This is what you WILL do in the game." Personally I prefer hearing, "This is what you CAN do in the game, along with this, and that, and oh yeah, this other thing too."

Anyone expecting TOR to be anything at all like Star Wars Galaxies has their head firmly planted up their ass.

No, TOR won't be SWG2 but it would be cool to see some great features in TOR again - like the crafting system. But this won't be there either.

Honestly, It would be nice to see SWG crafting, resource gathering, player housing, player vendors and SWG space implemented into TOR.

Following WoW in the crafting aspect blows - IMO. Everyone is a combat toon and a trader toon. If your guild is good enough, you have the expensive materials required to make server best... giving the non-elite folks the shaft because they don't have that at their disposal.

dont compare this game to SWG, comapre this game to other Bioware games, such as KOTOR and Mass effect. that is what they are aiming for, the KOTOR feel mixed with what they have learned with Mass effect 1-2 and Dragon age and ALL the other games. SWG is good, but you got to admit that they screwed up with a few things, SWG could of been just like EvE, a good Sandbox, player control, type game. but i wont get into detail about all this. still, like i said, compare it to other Bioware games sense it will have more of a Bioware-KOTOR feel then anything else

Funny how these guys completely downplayed the crafting system. Saying it is very similar to WoW. Now that we know about the Crew Skills, wow, what a pleasant surprise.
