It will likely still be a bad idea if they ever did that (which I highly doubt they will). Even if that juggernaut is 2 months away...it will still be a time where DCUO would have a very difficult time holding players attention at a vulnerable time of it's short existence. Think of what happened when Wrath releasing after War...even if the time for Cat will be a few weeks further away, it would still likely be as equally devastating to DCUO. Eespecially if DCUO is released with a crap load of issues.

I wouldn't release a game around WoW's expansion. There are just too many people who will buy it. Either you release early November with a polished game that users won't abandon and forget when WoW hits again or you wait until the WoW buzz dies again and release in 2011.

And it isn't like Cataclysm will be the best game in the world. But there will be so much hype around it that most MMO players will check it out. Even I will, and I haven't been serious about WoW in years (I never even fully explored Wrath).

While not surprising, this news has made me incredibly sad. :( I've really been looking forward to DC Universe Online, as I've found myself getting bored in City of Heroes.

Well as far as I understand there's been NO word on a DCUO Beta so how the heck are they even sure this game is working correctly with a mass audience w/o Beta testing on Public Machines and not the top of the Line PS3s and Super Computers @ SOE HQ

So wait. Just because Cata is coming out that means that no-one will be playing any other game? That doesn't sound right in the least bit. Look what other games are releasing before Cata comes out: Medal of Honor, COD, even Reach. I've never been big into console games but statistically they have been receiving more time on them than hardcore MMOs.

I believe that the DCU is not yet ready to be released. SOE did the same thing to SWG ten years ago. Saying it would release back in '01. What's sad is that whenever a new MMO, or even an older one, comes out we still hold a preconceived notion that it wont be better than WoW. And WoW isn't even a great game.

Honestly I played WoW for a few months after launch and never returned to it. It's not really a great game. Kill this then go kill that rinse repeat until you get enough XP. I remember back in '03 everyone was saying how it wouldn't even come close to Everquest, and that it wont be worth playing. But look at WoW now, it has a rabid, narcissistic following obsessed with keeping their game as the best when it still doesn't meet up to Evercracks fandom. Really besides destroying Azeroth and a level cap raise, what are they really adding to the game? Is there a new gameplay feature? I men honestly I want to know because I was thinking about doing a trial for it when it drops.

But with DCU coming from SOE I wont ever play it. Stupid NGE......

You're missing the point of WoW. If you look at its features its nothing special; the point is its execution. It's gone rapidly downhill since the dungeon finder (if I had a blog I'd follow that thought up but in short: 'tis killing community) But it stall has the finesse, fluidity and responsiveness to its combat that other MMOs fail to grasp. EVE is too slow for most, WAR lags/bugs/doesn't respond and AoC is a broken concept since combos add nothing but more key-presses.

All Blizzard games are like that; they don't have stand-out features immediately, but their key feature (that isn't on the box cover) is their polish. As of yet, no one can really match them due to their budget and scheduling dominance. If you want an analogy, think of Schumacher in Formula One; he was a great driver, certainly, but he had cars and tyres specifically built for him with patience, time and precision.

Honestly if you look at all of the Blizzard titles, from the beginning, they just copied Command and Conquer. Saying that though, Blizzard like many other developers over time have done that. Duke Nukem was just a snarky ripoff of Doom, COD and Medal of Honor the same thing. What makes a game stick out is it's gameplay, style, and features. EVE is slow for some players because some expect all MMOs to play out like WoW. It's also slow because it really mimics how economies and war play out. Making people, err players, more cautious. But with WoW, or World of Grinding as I call it, is only "fun and good" if you have ground out all the raids for that special purple helmet of smooching.

That doesn't make it a good game, it makes it a good product. Because how it looks game wise is that Blizzard is stepping away from WoW and moving onto their next MMO Worlds of Starcraft (more than likely), and Diablow III (Intentional misspelling, Diablo I and II were the best hack and slash games of all time, and now they turn cartoony? WTH). To make that last bit of cash off of the fans they release the next big thing: A dungeon and some more levels that will take a *casual* player at least a month to get to. And since their model is focused on the *casual* player and not the hardcore player they will introduce things like say the Dungeon Finder. Where the hardcore player can and will spend hours of their life building relationships and friendships based off of LFG, the core demographic want to get in get out and then make fun of the IT guy at work for playing for hours.

All in all WoW really is winning out on this comment board because people are looking for ways to defend their favorite game.

DCUo deserves the limelight, not only because I can finally /hug Supergirl, but it shows that SOE knows that there is some additional work to be done to the game and they need to do more testing. Now just because a game does not go into open Beta does not mean it is going to release. The only thing open Beta does is help the developers hash out the final flaws of the game.

Anywho, all of this is for not! Because once TA comes out WoW and all MMOs wont matter. Soooooooooooooo.........

Duke Nukem was not a rip off of Doom. Duke Nukem came out in '91, Doom in '93. Duke Nukem source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_(video_game)
Doom source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_(video_game)
People forget/didn't know that Duke Nukem is a very old franchise that was so much fun before they went FPS.

Sorry about that. I forgot the original Duke Nukem was a sidescroller. The Duke Nukem I was referring to was Duke Nukem 3d. Developed by 3d Realms.

My personal favorite was Duke Nukem II. Unfortunately the move to FPS and 3d Realms need to push the envelope with the art of the game (not the gameplay) is the reason why Duke Nukem Forever has been in production for, well,
For...ev...er!

Long Live the Duke!

You're looking forward, when you should be looking backward. History tells us that WoW expansions destroy MMO launches.

It could very well be they aren't delaying because of Cata. If Cata is the reason however, it's a very smart move.

You're wrong Dext.

Also, wtf is with the Blizzard hate?

I hate Starcraft, but I can still see that it's an incredibly well made game.

You fanboyishness is not welcome here! (by me anyway)

So the launch of a new MMOs sales depend solely on if there is a new WoW expansion? Could it be that that particular MMO was just a bad game?

Now what I was saying was that they, SOE, have historically done exactly what they are doing with DCUo. SOE will say "We are releasing **** on ****". And once the game comes close to the launch date SOE goes,"We need to do more testing". Now they did exactly the same thing with SWG. Which was released BEFORE WoW. Also SOE was set to release SWG without an open beta, just like DCUo was supposed to. I'm happy that SOE is extending the release. That way the game will be polished and actually ready to launch.

Hmm... does this also apply to the PS3 beta as well? I had signed up for that a while ago, so I'm hoping it does, as I doubt my poor laptop would be good enough.

Well if it's not done, then by all means, good call.

However.. If this really is related to the release of Cataclysm it's a mistake imo. I have been looking forward to trying DCU is an "in between" mmo. It looks like something that can be fun a few months, but I doubt it will have a lasting appeal. Unlike GuildWars 2, SWTOR or TERA for example.

I don't know about you guys, but if either of those games go live before DCU, I find it very unlikely that I will ever purchase this game.

Good move SOE. Releasing around that time with a game that wasn't ready would have been cataclysmic.
