I picked up the game since I am a MMO junkie.

First, this isn't a hard MMO to figure out. The controls are different, but It isn't the worst thing in the world. Just because it isn't modeled after WoW does not mean it does not work.

There are some things I would change. There are a few menu items that I would make faster to access. As it is built to support controllers, there really isn't drag/drop in the interface. If you have a controller and learn how to use it - the interface works pretty well actually.

I would like to see chat bubbles over heads. Chat boxes suck for immersion and common random interactions. Actually, I hate chat boxes in all MMOs. I don't have a great alternative either, but I always thought there is a break between what is happening on screen and following text in a scrolling box.

Also, there are some abilities that you can only use on an event (like use after you evade). Again, you have to watch the chat log for such to happen. It would be nice if those abilities were flagged in the interface.

There are interface lags between the server and client. Nothing I haven't seen in too many MMOs to count. That stuff gets better and better (why developers can't seem to release it right the first time...)

All in all, it is a good MMO. Different, true, but solid in its own right.

There is little "evade" words that pop up on your character when you evade, so I've never had to look at the chat log to see if I've evaded.

I am on the fence on this one, maybe some of you can help me.
The way the people who hate this game are so fast to jump up and yell concerns me, but not as much as the obvious fanboys that jump up to defend it. not sure how to take that hot/cold reaction...

Also, My PC is a couple of years old, not sure how a new new game is going to play on it. From the screenshots i have seen some of the graphics look pretty good but some just look meh. Is anyone playing on an older machine and having some success?

General consensus has the magic benchmark number at around 2500.
Run the official benchmark on both high (1080p) and low (720p).
If you can pull that number, you'll be able to run it with minimal difficulties, albeit with some bells and whistles disabled.

I have a friend on an older machine (GFX is a GeForce 8800, don't remember if it's a GTX or Ultra) and is having a ball.

My $900 mid-range PC will be 3 years old in April 2011 and I am having a difficult time running the game at any sort of "ooh, pretty" graphic level. I'm going to goof off and explore the different nations during my free 30 days, but until I have a better system I won't be trying to do anything else. :(

I have a very decent comp, but its a low power machine so my vid card is an Ati 5570 you can go to http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ and see where you rate in comparison.

So far i have had very little problems, I play on the 1600X900, which is smaller than my native 1920 1080, but thats no biggie since right now you can't alt+tab anyway.

I was exteremly worried about the same thing. but I am impressed by how well it runs while still looking so pretty.

Really uncertain about this. I was huge and into FFXIV at first, but after trying beta and seeing the same "promises" we've seen with other companies; finding it hard to justify a purchase.

Wish there was a release trial (don't say that was open beta, or I'll cry).

Game is a mess, only people that will like it are mindless FF fanboys, and the Japanese, but don't take my word for it, look at the sales a year from now, all will be clear then.

So what if I say I don't fit into the box you've just tried to put me in. I'm sick of ppl saying that you have to be a fanboy to enjoy this game.

The Japanese don't like it either, actually. Reviews have been universally abysmal.

And don't call me a hater, I played FFXI for years on the Phoenix server, I met my wife playing that game and have fond memories, I am just sick of buying clearly unfinished products, this game needs a ton of work, sure it's very pretty, but graphics do not make a good MMO. Aion proved that.

I agree with you here. I guess the question people need to ask themselves is if they are willing to pay for an unfinished game in hopes that it will one day be better or if they will nto buy the game. Or if they will wait to buy the game.

I think that if you are not new to the MMO Industry then you will not be supprised that the game is unfiinished. SO many MMOS start out this way. If you are not willing to put up with, dont buy the game. If you are like me and are used to this, you might wanna pick it up.

Can you list the MMOs that did start out completed enough? I've played quite a few from launch and every single one had huge additions and changes within the first year or 2.

Been enjoying it since beta, pre-ordered the CE too. It's certainly not the game for everyone but it's the game for me and ultimately that's all that matters.

Would love to play this game, except the it has the worst patcher in the world. Sucks that they didn't offer some sort of direct download option or something other than what they are currently using.

agreed the patcher is horrible, they clearly took it from FFXI but there is a slight twist. The file that the patcher is downloading is just a .torrent file, so you can DL it with your favorite torrent client a heck of a lot quicker than the game's patching engine, then just copy the file to the patch directory and go. 30 min for a patch beats 9 hours any day.
