If you're anything like us, you're a raging altoholic with an EQII character select screen crammed full of ratonga wizards, barbarian monks, froglok swashbucklers, and any number of other funky race/class permutations. One of the great joys of SOE's long-running EverQuest sequel is the huge number of races and classes available for play and now, courtesy of an update coming your way October 5th, Norrathians will no longer be limited to a select number of character slots.
EQII producer Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson announced the good news in a post on the official forums. "We've solved some technical issues recently and we can now offer character slots for sale," he writes. Each additional slot will be permanently tied to your account after a one-time purchasing fee of 1000 Station Cash ($10.00), and there is no limit to the number of additional slots you can buy. The service will also be available on both the Live and F2P servers.

Amazing how they can overcome these "technical issues" when money is involved lol

The technical issue was "We realized we could sell character slots to free players on the F2P server and make boatloads of money, but if we did that, the Live players would be angry, especially since we've been telling them we can't do it for 5 years."

Oh yeah! So true! But they will probably get at least another $10 from me.

It is about time. People have been asking for this option for *years*. Some people have been subscribing to Station Access (+$15/month) *just* for a few extra character slots so a one-time $10 fee will seem like a bargain to them. I expect the number of Station Access subscribers to plummet after this announcement. . .

If people are willing to pay for additional character slots, SOE would be foolish to give them away.
In any case, this practice has been around for awhile. Guild Wars charges $10 for additional character slot as well.

Actually, this is an issue mentioned years ago. It was a DB issue that's been around since launch

That's the comment they gave that I was referring to in my post.
I'm more inclined to believe that it was a money thing and that charging people for Station Access or second accounts was more beneficial when it was just the live servers, but now that they're doing EQ2X, they need to be able to sell slots to make profit on free players, hence the magical "we solved the database issue! (the same day EQ2X goes live)". They knew there was no way they could sell it there without a backlash from the Live playerbase (since people have been asking to purchase slots for years), otherwise I have no doubt they would have.

I have a Station Access account. I'll be keeping it and buying some more character slots for my EQ2X Silver account.
If they'd just let me play EQ2X on my SA account but at Silver rather than Gold, I'd save a fortune.

On a related note, the newest expansion is on sale for $5 on D2D:

Even if you're playing Extended, I think this raises your level cap from 80 to 90. Or something like that.

If anyone's seriously paying for this nonsense they might as well just give all their money away to Nigerian royalty now and get it over with.

SOE really do think they have a licence to print money, don't they?

Good lord, people, if you dont like EQ2X, dont play it for crying out loud. If people want to buy character slots for 10 bucks, let them. Is it really going to affect you in any way? Some of the stupid ass comments on here sound like they are coming from some of the most jaded people I have ever read. Get over it. And the reason a lot of people are picking the EQ2X server over a Live server is its a fresh start, and there are a ton of people to play with. If youd actually give it a shot, instead of whining and complaining, you might realize that it is pretty fun. And if anything, some of the restrictions could be viewed as an increased difficulty mode.
Anyway, TL;DR: Dont play it if you dont like it, but dont judge it until you havent tried it...And stop all the frikkin QQing...
