Tweet "Some secrets are best taken to the grave..." While it wasn't that closely guarded, we were waiting on the edge of our seats to hear the official word of CCP's World of Darkness this weekend. At The Grand Masquerade convention in New Orleans, the developers not only confirmed the project, but revealed that it is set in White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade setting. Vampire: The Masquerade was indeed the old World of Darkness RPG, so this MMO should send fans into paroxysms of joy.
Ardwulf's Lair reports that the MMO will come out in 2012 at the earliest, and that it "will have a focus on player politics and social interaction." The two-minute video reveal sets a gothic tone as a woman narrates the secret world of the vampires: "They're all around us, they control everything, they've always been here, waging their secret wars, devouring everything that gets in their way... It all begins after you die."
We'll bring you more details as they pour in, but in the meanwhile, check out the video reveal (NSFW, this is World of Darkness after all) after the break.

Nice one. Not content with the atrocious travesty that is Requiem (take Masquerade, cut out the more 'brain-heavy' 75% and then add the new 'zomg vampierzzz' derangement) CCP elects to reanimate the corpse of beloved Masquerade (using the typical CCP 'hundredth monkey' programming approach no doubt) and hand it over for the foul abuse of the online community.

Completely aside from the concept (which I hope to goodness-knows-what they can pull off, since I'm a long-time fan), what a horrible video. It's all 'concept' stills and melodramatic voice over. Yes, I know the IP lends itself to melodrama, but I did not find this teaser video compelling in any way. Hoping for something better when they actually get some work done on this game, because New Bremen was one of the best online gaming experiences I've had to date.

Is going to be non stop pvp! I imagine half of the players will want to battle for Princedom! I imagine it kinda suck being a Prince of a city having to always hide in the Elysium hoping that the players you appoint to guard you won't turn against you. I expect many many people to play the game with no prior exp in V:TM TT or LARP. They won't follow the rules! It'll be chaos! Frak it I'm going to declare myself a member of the Black Hand(of the Sabbat) right now and prepare for Gehenna!

So as someone who only ever played Masquerade (and a long while back) I often ask what the differences are between it and requiem. Most of the answers I get are things like no more camarilla/sabbot.. less clans.. different abilities blah blah.
But what I REALLY want to know is how the overriding backstory has altered. Is there still wild/weaver/wyrm? Is the end of all things still looming on the horizon? Personally I felt all of that made for very epic story possibilities.. and I hope requiem hasn't trashed it all?

Requiem basically did away with metaplot for the most part. It is more a "toolbox" approach, wherein they give some possibilities, and say, "You can choose one of these for your game if you want, or you can do something completely different. There is no one 'canon' way." Naturally, you can't do that in an MMO. They could have taken some of those options and put them together to form a cogent whole, but I think they took the correct route in choosing Masquerade as a starting point. They have stated that they will take from whatever they've made to make the best vampire MMO they can.

Nosferatu was always my favorite clan.

Yeah, less clans but then each clan has well over a dozen bloodlines so the actual splatt count is much higher. they did scrap the metaplot which was introduced bythe revised edition of the previous game sbut then these were the new kids on the block who invented that metaplot so it'll be back soon enough. They said requiem is 'toolbox' but its not actually as toolbox as 1st abd 2nd edition masquerade so ....
oh and the system for the nWoD is more like the dumb things of the 1980's that RPG's were trying to get away from in the 1990's and has all but forgotten buy the 2000's. The set up is very cookie cutter, all supernatural types have 5 clans and 5 political sects more or less.
