The adage goes that no matter how fast developers put content into MMOs, players will blow through it even faster. The end result is a good crowd of antsy gamers with a lot of time on their hands and a desire to do something... anything. Enter player-run events, special games and activities created by players, for the players. These cover the gamut from parades to scavenger hunts to suicidal charges deep into enemy territory.
Some of my favorite memories from MMOs come from participating in -- and even creating -- special events. Level one gnome runs across the world of Azeroth used to be a popular pastime in WoW, City of Heroes is well-known for its constant costume design contests, and not a day goes by without some sort of concert peppering the towns of LotRO.
So what are your favorite player-run events? How have you seen the ingenuity of your fellow gamers blossom into memorable experiences? Did you ever run one yourself? Wake up, splash your face with scalding-hot coffee, and dish!

Hulkageddon

Most definitely. Although I'm not a big fan of Hulkageddon because my primary source of income is mining and I'm essentially grounded whenever the event comes around again, every time again I'm impressed by the sheer scale of it. The participants blow literally billions of ISK worth of mining barges and exhumers to kingdom come every time a Hulkageddon is held, which is very impressive. Even though thinking about all those poor innocent Hulks that'll never get to melt another Veldspar asteroid again touches my miner heart...
If only the aftermath wouldn't last so long; weeks after Hulkageddon ends the number of suicide ganks on exhumers is still higher than normal. And I swear that the 'normal' number of ganks also increases with each successive Hulkageddon.

OMG, what a great topic!
My favorite events would have to be first, MantleCon! http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/MantleCon_1080_AE
Basically, because I was a host. This was my first ever community event to host.
My next favorite is coming up in a few months. It's going to be the biggest community event ever held in Guild Wars, with the largest prize pool ever given out in a single community event. Did I mention it's a charity event for Breast Cancer?
Pink Day in LA-http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Pink_Day_in_LA
Guild Wars has always been known for having a proactive community who likes creating their own events. I wonder, does this happen often in other games? I don't recall many community events when I played WoW a few years ago...

There have been quite a few great Player run events in SWG. From an elaborate rescue mission on Dathomir from the Imperial Prison, to a guildie who was quitting the game and wanted to kill his character off in a heroic battle. All using the storyteller tokens provided in game. The funny thing is that for most of the player run events they were more entertaining than the 'heroic' instances. And they were way better than all of the quests combined. It's to bad that SOE wont have a contest to create permanent quests based off of the player created events.
(Note: I'm not talking about the chronicle system. Those are just terrible. But they are getting better.)

Back when people didn't hate SWG for a patch they did 5 years ago there was an event called (I think) Empire Day that put pvp in locations that never saw pvp. The players on the server decided to get together and stage battles between the rebels and the empire. It seemed like all of Shadowfire (the server) was out fighting the good fight. I remember this event because it ended with not just one jedi, but two that where willing to take the risk of a 100k xp loss if they died. At the last large battle of the night the devs decided to jump in and spawned an AT-AT for the empire side which was a nice cherry on top of a day that made me look at swg in a new light. I also found out what server lag is and why it sucks that day too.
This event was so much fun because it fostered pvp in locations that where never used for pvp. Seeing jedis in action was kind of a big deal back then when there where only a handful on each server and those jedis where crazy OP but I think people where fine with it because of all of the work it took to get to that OP level. Seeing at AT-AT in (virtual) person in my first MMO kinda left a stain in my pants too.

Back when I was playing City of Heroes, a member of my guild on the Champion server organized an Elvis Impersonator day. Over a dozen people all dressed like the King, dancing and having fun in Atlas Park.
Man, I've gotta find those screenshots again...

MXO was the pinnacle of player run events of my long MMO journey.
During the climax of an event we were running as Tetragrammaton, the whole server showed up, that was memorable...
