The force is strong with Clone Wars Adventures! This colorful little virtual world is barely a week out of launch, and Sony Online Entertainment has announced it has managed to pass one million accounts registered in that time. When one considers that SOE's other kid-friendly property, Free Realms, took 18 days to hit the same number of accounts, this is impressive news indeed. To celebrate hitting this first million, all Clone Wars Adventures denizens will be given a special limited-edition in-game Golden Mouse Droid to enjoy. Additionally, the company is throwing a huge party today at 3 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. EDT), which will kick off a week of in-game events.
We'd like to send our congrats out to the entire SOE team on its success with CWA. Hopefully we'll see even more added to this fun little world in the months to come as the television series progresses and the storyline in-game changes to follow it.

Star Wars branding sells.
Let's see if it retains...
Also, it's not a world or an MMO; so yeah, can we stop covering it now?

We feel it fits as a virtual world, so we cover it.

With all due respect Krystalle, and not that you guys owe us anything, but I'm wondering how it even fits as a virtual world. It's literally a several screen mini-game lobby... and you can choose to totally skip the lobby part. If lobbies qualify as MMOs now, that opens the doors to a lot of debate. By that standard, Red Dead Redemption should fit on this site too.
Not being snarky. Honestly, am I missing something?

I wasn't really trying to be harsh (not that I can't be harsh on STO for their incompetence), I was just being honest. STO, DDO, Clone Wars, Guild Wars, Neverwinter (from the sounds of it), etc never were MMO's in my eyes. If their lobby-group up-then poof to an instance are considered Massive Multiplayer, then Left 4 Dead is an MMO along with every Xbox Live game.
An MMO game to me is a game that has a virtual world/universe (it can have open zones to simulate a world like EQ) and in that world if 200 people decided to go to one tiny area at once, they can do so. An MMO to me is a game where you can travel to where you're going, come across another player fighting a NPC, then hop in and heal/save that player from dying if they're in trouble. If you can't do that in a game, it's either not an MMO or it's using the MMO name as an excuse to charge a monthly subscription. That's my opinion of what an MMO game is and should offer.

They cover it because it's SoE. They want to maintain a good working relationship with them so they give games like Clone Wars, which are not virtual worlds in any way, some coverage.

I tried this and thought it was cute, but is there anything else to do other than the mini-games? I keep seeing how this game will change along with the TV show storyline, but don't understand how things can change when you can just play Gungan toss.

Unless I'm grossly mistaken-- and it's possible -- there's nothing other than the games. I mean, I guess they giving you some kind of living space (since you can buy items for it) and let you buy cash shop cosmetic items for your avatar, but there's not much more than that to add to the games.
In my opinion, the only reason any of us even took note of it is because it was mismarketed as an MMO. Coupled with the numerous references to its relationship to Free Realms (they're only very slightly alike), they set us up to expect something *totally* different than what they were delivering.

I'm not even going to comment on how stupid this is. They don't say a single thing other then they have hit 1 million registered users. Heck for all we know (and if I'm not mistake my open beta account still fully works for the game) if thats the case then is it not a bit misleading to say they hit 1 million users within a week of being old?
Wouldn't that be more along the lines of a month + is the time it took for them to hit that mark? (Cause I believe there was no wipe between open beta and launch as far as user accounts goes).
Also does that number also count station pass owners? If so then is that not even a bit more misleading since there is nothing that says a station pass user has to play the game yet they are being counted in the pool cause thats exactly what they did with Free Realms to bolster the numbers to make it look good.
I wouldn't mind seeing what there concurrent user count is. This whole we have XX million users registered is total crap and very misleading. Thats like Blzizard coming along and saying they have over 100 million registered users but only have 5 million concurrent active users.

Hi everyone,
I think we've done the "this game is not an MMO" thing to death around here. The truth is that there is no hard-and-fast rule or widely accepted definition about what constitutes an MMO. There's a big wide zone of "kinda-maybe-like-an-MMO" in the middle, and we choose what we want to cover from there based on a wide variety of factors, including comparisons to other games we already cover as well as things we know about where the games are headed in the future.
My recommendation? Send in a question to Ask Massively. Maybe that topic would be worth more discussion in a dedicated Q&A, rather than a news post about CWA? I think you can assume that if we're posting about a game, it's "MMO-enough" for us.

Then I expect to see CounterStrike and Diablo reported on as MMOs here to, Brianna. Obviously to you, anything that supports more than 2 players is an MMO.

This is their site, so they have the discretion to cover what they deem worthy of covering under the ever-broadening, fluid umbrella called MMO, a term that continues to morph and redefine itself, much to the chagrin of a segment of the gaming community.
With that on the table, I hope to see more coverage of Diablo 3, Dungeon Siege 3, and Firefall. Even Vindictus, Dragon's Nest, and Phantasy Star Online 2 would be welcomed here.

Firefall, Dragon Nest, and Phantasy Star Online have all been covered on Massively before. Vindictus is of course one of our biggest upcoming games and we've done multiple giveaways and a livestream on it already. Woot!
I would seriously doubt we will get to cover Brink, D3, or DS3, as even they don't market themselves as MMOs or virtual worlds. However, our umbrella site, joystiq.com, would be a good source for info on those.

Fine, if this is an MMO, then we can start covering NeverWinter Nights, Quake, Unreal Tournament and all of the other multiplayer / lobby games out there. Seriously, there is a reason why they differentiate a multiplayer game from a MMO and this site is terrible at getting it right.
Posted: Sep 24th 2010 6:06PM Keen and Graev said
Multiplayer is becoming synonymous with MMO. They are indeed two entirely different styles. Companies are quick to attach a MMO label (as are game sites like this) because it attracts a newer crowd.
Multiplayer is now old hat. MMO is where the money is at.
