Great stuff. Except it does not answer the one question people ask. Where do i get a mount? But whatever. not like any player asking in chat will read this article anyway.

I've been playing for a week and they keep throwing free Turbine Points at me -- had 200 by level 20 and I wasn't really trying to complete any deeds. Enough to buy the horse license and then a mount for 500 silver.

I'm approaching level 25 now and will definitely be unlocking the next 100+ quests and instances. It fits my play style which is sorta casual.. I pay once to unlock the stuff and it's unlocked forever.

Heres some more - the best advice for players who want to play without a subcription: don't. Certain services are locked to subscribers only or are worth an obscene amount for a temporary duration. The game is very fun, epic, atmospheric, and worth a subscription, but if you pay for things in the store and have no sub you're wasting your money.

I'm sorry, but that's not a very fair assessment. Almost everything that's locked can be unlocked with Turbine Points. Turbine Points can be bought in the store, but they can also be earned within the game. And frankly, there are a LOT of points up for grabs.

The totally free account provides two character slots, per server. There are 1,470 points per character that can be earned totally free per character without buying any unlocks. That's 2,940 without creating extra characters on other servers or deleting characters.

Mines of Moria costs 2,495, granting two more character slots. There's another 2,940 points you can earn. With those points you can buy the unlocks for pretty much all the remaining pre-Moria zones, getting you up to all the points available within Moria itself and unlocked with the MoM purchase. With the four character slots, MoM has 6,070 points available.

I could go on, but the bottom line is that without paying one penny you can unlock almost everything that a VIP player enjoys. It requires grinding to accomplish, but the points are there. And if you spend just the ~$10 to buy the smallest chunk of TP you immediately and permanently become a VIP with another character slot. This makes it much, much easier to get what you need for the MoM purchase -- much less grinding required.

Personally, this cheap Premium upgrade is the route that I would take if I was starting the game fresh today. In fact, a few people in my kinship are doing exactly that and enjoying themselves immensely. Although I also suspect that I would start to feel guilty after a while about playing such a quality game without paying the developers for their effort. I'd end up buying more points or subscribing just to be nice. But that's me. :)

My source for all these figures: http://lotro.mmorsel.com/p/tpfinder.html

Play smart and plan ahead a bit. You'll get an awful lot played without having to spend money.

Well for one no swift travel. If You ever done epic book You'll know the pain about traveling even with swifts. But without? Sure there is 60 minutes temporary pass for 200 points but buying it every day You need to travel around a bit? Not to mention hubs like angmar where You don't even have non swift version. Ride around mobs that will dismount You? Or maybe deal with 30-40 minutes travels?

Then there is trait slots unlocking for EVERY new character You'll make.

No PvMP for You.

Those are just major issues with pay as You go.

And without spending pennies any normal human being will just look for another game as grind and being gimped is just outrageous.

ComradeDomovoi said truth - You have to pay if You want level or play end game seriously. Maybe this will change but pay as You go isn't viable for now.

@crazynanny

Is that all? Swift travel and monster play? Correct me if I'm wrong, because I am rather new to this game...but those do not sound game-breaking to me. Convenience-breaking, perhaps...but not game breaking.

Birk, I think you are correct... really, the only thing that isn't unlockable in some decent capacity is Swift Travel and Monster Play. I'd complain about the swift travel, but I really haven't hit any area yet that I couldn't travel to using the stables , and the Monster Play? Really? If you're playing LotRO for the PvP, then you're seriously in the wrong place anyway.

Basically it comes down to this, I subbed previously, and I'm now playing as a premium player. I've thrown some bucks Turbines way for some points, bought the account-wide bag space, but I don't feel gimped at all. In fact, whereas the deeds before seemed like an awful grind, the deeds now are more fun because theres a permanent monetary reward attached to them, along with the traits already rewarded. Even the mount, I thought I'd find myself mad at, but its easy to accrue 195TP through deeds, so even if its by toon, making the TP is easy. Equipping the traits? Meh. I figure if I eventually get to the top levels with a toon, then I'll just pay the TP to unlock them. It'll take me a while, sure, but I like to enjoy games and not have to rush through them. Trust me, in the long run, I won't be paying any more for this game than a subbed player is.

Overall, for a lot of people, myself included, having another way to pay is awesome, and I don't feel gimped in the least bit.

I can not say much about LOTRO F2P cause... its not out in EU. Actually ... that tells you quite abit about LOTRO F2P... And the quality it is offering to gamers atm...

PPL in EU are hoping for release in september.... No news tho. BUT.....

I can tell you that my free trial account in EU just got a "great" deal on buying SOA from Codemasters this week..... Hoping to fool few more to buy a product that goes free to play in next 2 weeks ( hopefully - we were told it would go F2P few days after US version....)

I'm pretty sure its widely known that Codemasters is the only one to blame for the EU delay so I'm not certain what your little inuendo is supposed to be saying. Maybe you can clarify?

Yeah like a lot of EU'ers I've updated my US client and have wandered around Landroval just to get a look at the store. I welcome the change but wish Codies to pull their fingers out :@
