If nothing else, you're plugging Megaten Online in these 'previews', which is great.

Or would be, if the rumor I've heard several places that the game is no longer getting new content is true.

The game is solid. It's simple as that.

Considering that the servers performed near flawlessly for the first two days, before the first scheduled maintenance, I would say that it's one of the most solid launches of a MMORPG in the last few years, performance-wise.

The core for a great game is definitely there. It has the usual idiosincrasies and little problems here and there that all MMORPGs have at launch, but it's a very solid foundation to build up on, especially the class system that's doubtlessly the best in the market.

We'll see how it performs in the first free month, but what I've seen so far is quite positive (much more positive than what I've seen on launches of all major MMORPGs in the last few years), especially now that keyboard+mouse works great.

The naysayers and haters can ragequit (but most of them weren't interested in the game anyway from the start), we'll have lots of fun without them :D

"So today has been quite the angry day"...

Well, the anger has been brewing for a while now. Hasn't anyone realized that due to all the mmorpg failures, we've all gotten a bit disillusioned with the whole process of releasing half finished games for a quick buck (and patching in fixes)? It can't just be me seeing this...

Anyways, thanks for your coverage Massively.

I really wish I did more research into the pay plan before I got this game.

You have to pay extra money for EACH CHARACTER. So basically - you pay $10 a month to get no characters - that's just your service charge. To get a single character it's an extra $3 - and continues to be $3 for every single character you want to make. Now someone is going to say "You can do everything on one char!" and yet some of us like to have more than one, play different races, etc.

I'm going to play out my one month (since you can have 8 chars the first month for free) and then that's it. I simply can't play a game that charges on a per character basis - and sorry but I like to play multiple races and play on a few different servers (mostly I'll pick a normal server, an RPG server (official or not), and then if the game ever has it, a PK server - and like to play a few races on each).

IF this game somehow super addicts me in this month I plan on playing, I'll consider paying for one or two characters, but for the most part my plan is to quit (calmly, tho rage quitting is fun) over their silly payment plan.

the game costs 12.99 to play. which is less the the norm of 15.00

if you want other characters u can pay for them but i dont see why you would need an extra character?

This is not WoW where 1 character can only be Warrior and if you wanted a Paladin u would have to start a new one. One character becomes whatever you want it to be which makes your progression and immersion that much better.

@Stuckov

Get the heck out of here. MewMew explained, very succinctly, why they are not interested in the subscription options. I totally agree with this and, had I been even remotely considering purchasing this game, I will never because of having to pay for extra characters.

You don't see why anyone would need an extra character but I'm willing to bet you're going to be paying for another one at some point.

And don't think something has to be a WoW clone just to be somewhat current with MMO trends.

First I think you would be out of any money you would bet. I played WoW and I never made a second character. I dont see what would make me even consider paying for two characters in a game where one character can do everything. Having 2 would just mean they would be both halfassed instead of one really advanced in lvl/quest/mission progression. I can tell already you have never played FFXI. That aside, why are you even here? Obviously you have no interest in playing the game as you said...are you here to troll? Can you tell McDonalds or Target or Walmart what they charge for any of their items? Can you tell Ford what they charge for any of their cars? Its a matter of what you find worth paying and what they find worth charging. Simple as that you dont like it does not mean that they are evil and must change their ways. I frankly like the way they charge their costumers. Giving us the option to go for a cheaper but still be able to enjoy everything the game has to offer. They could have made everyone pay 15.00 but they did not and for that im greatfull.

The account fees have been public for months. if you feel "cheated" in any way, you simply cheated yourself by not researching.

Anyway, there's simply zero need to have alt characters in this game. Zero. Which results in the fact that most people will end up paying LESS than the usual 15 dollars other games require.

If you want the "luxury" (as in something totally superfluous) of multiple characters, then you can as well pay for it. You'll be in the minority. Otherwise you can join the happy majority of people that save money compared to the rest of the P2P market.

In any case, SE has been very upfront about the fees, and missing it is simply a matter of your personal error.

@xslipperyx: "And don't think something has to be a WoW clone just to be somewhat current with MMO trends."
If developers blindly followed the "trends", we'd still playing platformers on the NES.
No thanks.

Also, Stuckov expressed a very legit opinion, you aren't in the position to tell him to get out of anywhere. Seriously, get over yourself :D

@stuckupov

Since you mentioned, you don't see why anyone would want or need a second character, you should do some research into the game before commenting on it. Pro-tip.

Crafting in FFXIV is related to your stats. For example, goldsmithing improves with your dex stats. Blacksmithing improves with your str stat. Chance to crit/success becomes greater.

Now if you want to repair your own gear, you need to be a blacksmith and npc repair is only 50%. You need to skill up bs to repair better gear. If you crit/succeed less often in crafting, it requires way more mats to level up BS.

Now if your main jobs are 'magic users' aka conj/thalamage, how many points do you think you've invested in your str attribute versus your investing in mind/peity/vitality stats? Well, you wouldn't be a good Disciple of magic if you went dex/str/agil would you?

So for crafting, you'll want two characters.

Now if you want to have a tank and have a mage...well...doing it on the same character makes for a weak tank and a weak mage as to make oyur mage skills better you want mind/peity. To make your tank skills better and do more dmg you need to make your str/dex/agil better. However, by investing points in tank attributes, it does not benefit your mage attributes or vice-versa.

So you end up being a less-potent mage or less-potent tank. To make a good/great tank you'd need two characters. To make a good/great tank and mage and melee dps, you need 3 chars, etc etc.

So if you are into crafting -> need multiple chars
if you are into doing well at ffxiv -> need multiple chars
if you enjoy roleplaying the different races -> need multiple chars.

Get it yet?

With all due respect Wes, couldn't the same be accomplished by making a few friends who are crafters? This way, you don't pay more per month and still get the same benefits... plus the benefit of a virtual business relationship.

I'm not sure why everyone has to be self-sufficient anymore. It's an MMO, why not be social and make a few friends via gameplay?

Well, early impressions for me after a couple hours with the released version - a lot of the menu clunkiness has been fixed. No longer do I have to wait 4 or 5 seconds for buttone clicks to regester when buying/selling. Some quests have been fixed, etc. Overall basically the same game as Beta so far with less annoyances.

I still hate the SE downloader though. Uggg.
