When I see a title like "First Impressions" I think of an early review. This was nothing but an opinon piece with virtually no review value.

Played beta from start to finish, and while some things did indeed improve, as a whole this game will only be a hit with the FFXI, FF fanbase, and maybe in Japan, other than that it will fail to bring in the masses. Frankly the "launch" is not until next year when it launches on PS3, this is just an extended beta that SE is making the PC crowd pay for. Opinions are just that, what matters is sales, and I'm betting other than the built in fanbase I listed at the top of this post, the sales will be weak..

Maybe it'd be worth giving these sorts of articles an [Opinion] tag, or something.

I think you were being sarcastic, but just in case you weren't (and/or for the other folks who repeatedly miss these sorts of things in our non-news columns and articles)... this article is filed under both the opinion category and opinion tag. *points up*

When I see an article touted as "First Impressions", I expect to hear about installation, configuration, character creation and the beginning levels of said game.

This is simply a squeeeeeee opinion piece. And honestly, that's just fine. I'm glad -someone- enjoys this game. (I don't) -- But this Op-Ed piece should definitely be renamed because it's not a first impression of anything.

I agree with the people that say the reviewer is out of his mind with fan-itis. This was one of the least fun experiences of a AAA MMO I've ever played.
I don't think anyone is corrupt, but goofy? Maybe.

In this biz, First Impressions is supposed to be an objective look at a new release when there isn't enough time to write a proper preview/review.

This however is just an opinion piece, which really is more editorial in nature. Now I'm not against anyone (including writers) having opinions, I'd just like to see these articles labeled correctly.

A First Impressions should have been an OBJECTIVE look at RETAIL, a sort of primer for the full review. That's now what we have here. Not a big deal perhaps, but still slightly off-putting.

Shall be watching this launch with interest. I'm not sure I recall an MMO launching before with such polarised views from the general MMO crowd. Views so polarised that both sides regard the other sides as aliens almost.

Most MMO launches have a certain element of fanboys (and girls!) that have adopted the title as the new holy grail and shall defend it to the death. Yet not so many launch with the level of vitriol spewed in its direction by such a dedicated group of haters. No smoke without a fire I reckon.

Yet for all the hate, this title will do alright once all the first month ragequitters are done. A loyal fanbase and a game that really has not evolved since FF XI particularly will appeal to this core of fans. It just wont appeal to anyone else and it seems like a massive missed opportunity to me.

As for Massively itself, well I am not alone in thinking its the number one site for MMO news and generally one of the worst for its opinion pieces. The staff are obviously dedicated but it really does seem they all come from the "kittens and bunnies" side of the MMO crowd. I dont ever recall anything other than the mildest of criticism but I can understand why its this way.

yea i'd much rather read first impressions of the actual game, pretty much anyone who wanted to play the beta was able to at this point, including myself. and i am one of the apparently few who enjoyed it. but i'm much more interested to hear about the things that get added into the retail launch version that were kept out of the beta

eagerly anticipating massively tv later tonight to see what its like

Guys, no individual's "impressions" should (or could) ever be "objective" anything. There's no such thing as an objective review. An impression is an overall opinion, maybe even a simplistic judgment based in part on emotion -- not necessarily an aggressively critical or extensive review -- those should only come well after launch, wouldn't you agree?

For example, my impression is that many of you would not have been satisfied with anything we posted under any title unless the writer had torched FFXIV and invited you all to the bonfire :D

This piece was never meant to be a novice's primer, either. Check out some of our past material, which leads up to this post and includes a guide for refugees from WoW as well as a guide to crafting, in addition to preview articles covering various aspects of the game in beta.

I find it funny that so many people misconstrue something entitled "First Impressions" with "Review".

Would it help if it was called "My First Impressions"? How about "My First IMpressions, My Opinions, Yours may be different, and I am okay with that but these are mine"

Geez people. Get over yourselves. First Impressions has always been an opinion column on Massively. That's at least been my "impression."

Funny. When a member of the Media puts up an Editorial, they don't start questioning the integrity of the LA Times or CBS. Jesus.

Right, so. Considerable amount of people believe that an MMO review can be done on day 1. In context, even with a CE order ready to go *I will admit, being in Australia I had the game discs and patched before the servers went live. so I had played the game a fair bit before this article came out.

In the context of knowing that in NA no one had this head start then clearly it is unresonable to have a critical, objective review of any game, which is fair, done within a few days.

This all shows that controversy is more entertaining to many people and when they don;t get it from the writers they go elsewhere.

Thumbs up to Massively for being honest and open about thier own opinions and impressions. I'll be following the coverage of the game through the foreseeable future.

You shouldn't write articles entitled as first impressions of a released game based on open beta and obviously without any past level 5 research done. Because if you had you would know that what you are writing gives false and misleading impressions.

tl:dr version: You are giving this game more credit than it is worth for based on the first 30 mins of gameplay.

Not exactly adding credibility to the article or massively.

Damn massively, you folks that lost, for want of a better, softer term, or you not get intuitive sarcasm?

I figured since the OP didnt get the title nor their article content correct i could throw in my car building quests, guess not. If you need a shove here it is, impressions would indicated what you thought about the first bits of said title, the article has no bearing on the title about a first impression.

Bahahah....
Oh by the way before you delete this one (laugh), the exhaust system and last side of the graphics are finished o the challenger....looks and sounds sweet. (heh)

I suppose the game could be fun, but the system requirements were insane. I thought with my system specs being well above the minimum and at or above the recommended specs, I should be able to play at least on medium settings. However, I had to turn everything to low and I still had super lag and choppiness. I am a FF fanboy so I wanted this game to rock, but I was disappointed with the thought of having to shell out another couple thousand bucks to upgrade my hardware to even play it.

Hello,

I never really comment on these sites but in this case i found this first impression so misleading i felt like i had to warn others who are thinking about buying this game.

Both me and my girlfriend have the collectors edition. This game is beautifull, the graphics are the best i've ever seen in a mmorpg. The setup of no central marketplace, limited quests etc i liked, your basically forced to socialise instead of grinding levels. It looked brilliant on paper. It all made us think of SWG, a game we have warm memories of. Then the technical implementation came and whacked us in face. Here are a couple of highlights:

- Timers; everything you click, is in the menu, you have no direct interaction with the world. Every single one of those actions has, what must be timers, i just can't believe you can have so much lag in an interface. Prepare to wait 5-10 seconds of before and after timers on every single action. Animations for harvesting for example, are dragged out to the extreme as well. Prepare to look at the same boring animations(they call it mini games) for at around a minute with menu clicking included over and over again.

-Mazes; The world? there is no world, only mazes. The forests are beautifull graphics wise but are repeated over and over again in giant mazes. Walking through them makes you completly lose track, everything looks the same, there are maybe 3,4 different creatures in there endlessly repeated. The "open" parts of the world are mazes as well, you can see the borders of them drawn as lines on the map. Since they don't allow you to jump you can't cross these borders. if you want to go past one, even if it is a ridge of 3 centimeters high? forget about it, you have to walk the maze and santa's little helper is not there to safe you. Sorry for the simpons reference ;) .

- To be aggro or not to be aggro; you can't see if a mob is aggro, again a good idea on paper. The execution? You will find yourself running past two or three mobs, then about 3-5 seconds later, sounds familiar doesnt it? You get one shotted. No idea which one of them did it, you see no animations of them getting aggro. My girlfriend got killed over and over by a bizarre dragonlike creature that was just sitting somewhere in the area where she had to to her tutorial quest. We couldnt even get close enough to hit it. Very newbie friendly.

I can go on really, there are plenty of other things to mention like crashing on every alt-tab you do. But i'm gonna stop now, i don't feel like i should do the job of the person who wrote the piece above. Perhaps he played on another server, perhaps he is in Japan and all things I experienced are lag related I dont know. I do feel however that his piece is one sided, something that is perfectly acceptable for a personal blog or something but not for a high profile site as massively. It gives the piece the taint of corruption even if his intention were nothing else then wanting to share his honest exitement.

Regards,
Deg
