All Points Bulletin
was originally conceived as being a groundbreaking game, and it was. Specifically, it seems to have broken new ground in the shortest turnaround time between launch and closure. And while there may be a ray of hope after all, it's going to be hard for the game's players to love again after having their expectations so suddenly deflated. Whether you liked the game or not, it's sad news that the city streets have been forcibly emptied quite this quickly.
Despite the sadness, we here at Massively soldier onward, helped by the fact that we've grown worn and jaded by now. Past the cut, you'll find what we will be playing over the next two days. And considering the context, we've also provided our thoughts on what dead game we'd like to see resurrected. So click on past the cut, and add in your own play plans for the weekend in the comments!
Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman):
Well, I will playing Vindictus
, then finishing up my time with Freejack
. Then, back to Vindictus
, followed by some Vindictus
, then I'll take a nap. Then, more Vindictus
. After that, I might retire with a nice cup of Vindictus
What closed game would I bring back to life? Vindictus
. Oh, wait. The Chronicles of Spellborn
. Not only is it my favorite looking game, but with a few tweaks it could have been my all-time favorite.
Brendan Drain (@nyphur):
I'll be chatting with a certain anonymous thief in EVE
as I write up the final part of his story for this week's EVE Evolved
. Most of my EVE
corp is inactive since Planetary Interaction doesn't seem to have been enough to hold their interest, so I'll probably log a few hours in World of Warcraft
again this weekend instead.
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): Viiiiinddiiiictttuuuuus! My guild won't stop talking about it, so I have to take a peek. I'm also still playing CoH: Going Rogue!
For my part, I wish I could take another stab at Asheron's Call 2
. I was a big fan of the first game but never really dipped into AC2
beyond its beta, and by the time I was ready, it was all over.
I'll be playing nothing but Fallen Earth
. The new combat system from the 1.7 patch will be up on the Public Test Server. I'll be tinkering with that all weekend.
Bonus question: I can't think of a single MMO that's gone now that I miss.
This weekend is apparently when every single person I know asks me to provide cheap physical labor, so I'll be spending most of my weekend helping a friend move and helping my girlfriend's father repair some windstorm damage. In the spare time I do have, I'll be prepping myself for Final Fantasy XIV
next week and relaxing with Recettear
If I could bring back any game? I'm opting for the obvious NCsoft entry. That's right, bring back Auto Assault
! I'm as serious as a heart attack here.
Greg Waller: A mix of WAR and LotRO for me. And if I could revive any MMO it would most certainly be Tabula Rasa.
Jef Reahard: Halo: Reach
for me, and a dash of Age of Conan
(yay for my new Hulk). Bonus round: I'd bring back Pre-CU SWG
, even though I like the current version as well. Smuggler/rifleman/shipwright was the most fun I've ever had in the massive genre, so if they could meld the old skill system with the new fluff features, I'd probably forsake other MMOs.
Jeremy Stratton (@Jeremy_Stratton):
A little Runes of Magic
, a little Lord of the Rings Online
, and a little Vindictus
. I hope to have my PC upgraded with a shiny new coat of graphical awe and wonderment by the end of the weekend. By next weekend I hope I can proudly say that I will be playing Vanguard
among my line-up of MMOs I'll be playing.
I would bring back Tabula Rasa
. I have never played it and have no idea what it's like. But everyone's going on about it so much that I can't not wish to try it now.
Justin Olivetti (@Sypster):
I'm still putzing around in Rubi-Ka as I revisit AO
for the Game Archaeologist
. Perhaps I'll get some time with LotRO
as well if I can work it around running a garage sale.
As for a MMO to bring back, I'd have to go with Tabula Rasa
so Shawn will stop openly weeping in public. It makes for very awkward convention trips.
Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle):
I'll be sticking with Vanguard
this weekend, as I'd like to make sure I grok it well enough to write about it next week. Beyond that, I've just been told a friend is coming in from out of town out of the blue, so I expect much pubbing and very little gaming will occur.
Larry Everett (@Shaddoe):
My drug of choice for this weekend will be Vindictus
with a LotRO
chaser. All F2P! All weekend!
As for the which MMO would I want to bring back to life? That answer's simple: Tabula Rasa
, just so I don't have to hear Shawn mention bring it back on Massively Speaking. (I'm teasing, Shawn. Don't beat me -- again.)
Seraphina Brennan (@sera_brennan):
I'll be enjoying the weekend with some adventures through Middle-Earth (loving Lord of the Rings Online
!) Beyond that, I think I need to play some more Vindictus
, and do some convention planning, thanks to a Tekkoshocon meeting this Sunday. Oh, and I picked up a copy of the Leverage RPG's starter adventure, The Quickstart Job. (Yes, Leverage as in the TNT TV show Leverage, with Timothy Hutton. They made it into a tabletop RPG.) I want to get a party together, so I can go steal myself some gaming fun!
Shawn Schuster (@SSchuster):
I hope to try out Vindictus
this weekend in between prepping my house for sale on Monday.
I probably don't even need to say it, but if I were to bring back any dead MMO, it would be Tabula Rasa
. I literally still have dreams about that game. Help me Richard Garriott
, you're my only hope!
At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game -- and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
