Tweet It's an announcement that no MMO fan likes to see, but it hits even harder when it comes from a game with such potential.
APB Community Officer Ben Bateman broke the news just a short while ago: "APB has been a fantastic journey, but unfortunately that journey has come to a premature end. Today we are sad to announce that despite everyone's best efforts to keep the service running; APB is coming to a close."
The announcement is followed by statements from many members of the APB team, and while there is not a specific shutdown time at the moment, Ben says that the servers are currently up and invites everyone to come say goodbye.
We at Massively wish everyone at Realtime Worlds and APB the best of luck in the future.
[Thanks Brian for the tip!]
[Update: We've learned that the the game is expected to be taken offline within the next 24 hours. We'll keep you posted as the story develops!]

Wow, that may be one of the shortest lived online games I've seen 0.o

I believe it is actually the shortest-lived MMO in history.
The previous record, far as I know, was held by Seed which launched on May 2, 2006 and was canceled on September 28 of the same year. 149 days of life.
APB launched on June 29, 2010 and today is September 16. 80 days of life!
When a game lasts just over half as long as the previously shortest-lived MMO you KNOW there's a problem!

Actually I think that title (still) belongs to Auran's Fury.

According to that article, Fury went into administrations after just a couple months but the servers continued to operate for quite a while. The article announcing the server shut-down was written in August and Fury had launched the prior October.
Here's a good article: http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/2952/The-Four-Shortest-Lived-MMOs.html
Fury is listed as the #2 shortest. Seed was #1. Now they've both been bumped by APB.

Could this be considered the most short-lived MMO to date?

well, that's sad to hear.
Didn't like the game, but my favorite MMO was shut down.... if even one person called this their MMO home then my thoughts go out to them.

Well this sucks!

I'm really surprised they didn't go F2P first. Maybe the game isn't item-based enough to pull that off.

So much for the patch from the article two hours ago.

I honestly didn't see that coming. They were going to do an update today for pureskill servers and now the game is being shut down. How odd.
Oh well, I should have seen the writing on the wall. Only a few hundred people were playing during prime time. Hopefully there is another game like this in the future as I had a blast.

That was quick. I'm not surprised though; no content and just a lot of running around brainlessly shooting. How long can you keep people hooked on that, there are real FPS games out there that did it better minus the customization..... customization doesn't make a game.

I remember posters at gamestop for APB....and now it's closing up shop.
This game was like a Supernova, burned brighter and brighter until it just collapsed into a black hole.....
