Yoshida discusses the added challenges experienced with the game's dynamic format, as well as the many ways that the team has tried to expand upon the lessons learned from Final Fantasy XI. Players of the open beta have no doubt noticed the amount of detail going into each environment, and it helps make even mundane tasks more enjoyable. See what Yoshida has to say about designing Final Fantasy XIV's visuals after the cut, and keep your eyes open as the open beta continues (Square-Enix has been rolling out a new patch nearly every day).

One of the defining elements of Final Fantasy XI was the attention to detail, with every area of the world carefully crafted for maximum verisimilitude. It's a tradition that has been carried on to Final Fantasy XIV, with the game's art direction as one of its primary selling points. Akihiko Yoshida, the art director for the game, shares his thoughts on the design of the game and his hopes for the player experience in the newest Making of Eorzea video, embedded after the cut.

Really? They needed to pay a lot more attention to detail in their westernizing of the game and it's interface. As far as I could tell from the little bit of the beta I tried, they didn't learn a damn thing from FFXI other than improving their ability to annoy the hell out of western gamers.

I loved the art design for XII, which was half of why I hated that game.
All those great races from the GBA/DS games were there with even better, more distinct designs, and, naturally, the only one you could actually play as was one of the boring as all get out dark skinned human women with the rabbit ears.
Well. You can't please everyone, and my unusual tastes has damned me to never being pleased by all but two MMO's race selections.

As much as I love the character design and atention to detail, the sensation of immersion just comes crumbling down by the constant "invisible walls" I found everywhere. A shame realy, as everything is realy beautifull but for me, that is a samall detail I just can't deal with

It is pretty to look at, but not to play (using a PC at least). Simple interface and quality of life functions are nowhere to be seen.
Devs don't read forums because there arn't any official ones for english speaking players and apparently they don't speak english anyway as they tried to justify that in an interview.
Funny thing is, so far there are 170k pre-orders for PC in the US and only about 25k for PS3 which it clearly is designed for primarily.

I am too, this game really is a lot of fun. I don't know what invisible walls those guys are talking about outside of the ones that are there just for the beta which lead to areas we are not privileged to until release. I just can't wait for the 22nd so I can get started on my actual character!

Dude Iam feeling the same way along with ALOT of others I have talked to or partied with and the invisible walls they are talking about are the ones where the high cliffs are from where you cant drop down. Which was like in FFXI which makes it feel a bit realistic, cuz some of them cliffs are real high LOL anyhow its fun exploring the world is beautiful cant wait for SE to balance out the mob's and us so the fights become better specially when magic is casted the tanks have a hard time holding the hate cuz mobs want to go after the mages. Anyhow love it excited about the 22nd what server you on maybe you can join up in my LS iam currently on wutia and have a growing LS that we will be joining up the same server on release and doing it all over again ^^.

IDK what you are talking about there is sooooo much in that game as with mobs the land the beastmen are wicked cool even though they one shot my lvl 10 ass lol
the game has potential yes it's a learning curve but that is SE why make it easier for westerners its a new twist on a MMO that I for one and many others will enjoy in the coming years.

I've been playing this game in open beta now and it will be the first MMO in 5 years that I will not buy. Every, and I mean EVERY, other MMO I have at least purchased to try for one month.
This game is that bad. I'm don't mind and, in fact, enjoy a challenging game. The recent easy mode MMOs are a blight but FF XIV has a very poor interface, bland environments, and very poor quest system. The complete disregard for Western audiences is their choice and their right, but then don't expect it to sell here.

You're entitled to your opinion, as am I, but please learn to use proper English, particularly items like periods.

Looks to me like you cant be pleased. Otherwise you would have found a nice MMO out of the ones you have bought and stuck with it.
As for the people that say SE has learned nothing from FFXI I think they have... It was a major Success and thus they stuck with what worked. FFXI is not for everyone so if you dont like it dont feel bad god loves you just the same.

Why does every conversation always come down to ego and name-calling? This is only my opinion. If you like the game, I'm happy for you. Please do enjoy it. At least show respect to people who disagree with you, otherwise your genuine comments about the game will fall on deaf ears.
I actually do have MMOs that I have stuck with over the long haul, but I do like to try new ones that come on the market.

Since the last two days the crashing has stopped for me and the game runs smooth on high settings. I love how we can combine actions from different classes, it brings so much creativity to the way you approach monsters.I hope SE doesn't listen to the QQ from western gamers who want the game dumbed down, if you put just a bit of time into learning things and actually reading text it's so easy. Also, this is by far the best looking game I have ever played, the vistas are breath taking.

Not to mention the weather effects are just incredible...there are windy days, when the clouds go streaking by and you can see grass and leaves carried away by the wind.
The detail in the sound design is also incredible: rainy days will get you the sound of your own feet on wet pavement, grass, rocks and earth...and each sound is distinct.
The costume/armor design are just amazing and so far no one looks the same...everyone can wear whatever they want and crafting brings out many different cosmetic varieties.
All of the questing systems have not been implemented yet, so there's that in answer to some of the outcry.
My only issues thus far are:
--SE and uncommunicative and doesn't make the token gestures at community management that might actually make them some money and change some perceptions
--Us keyboard/mouse people need a new interface. QED. And make *all* keys assignable...not just 6. They made a half-hearted attempt a few patches ago but...guh.
--Optimization...I have to run three third-party, community created apps in order to get the game to make use of my $3100.00 hardware and make the game playable: Priority booster, HW mouse fix, and Windower.
Except for the first complaint I can easily see these issues addressed by the launch client.
I will say, in summation, if you are a person who has an external locus of control, can't handle nuance and doesn't like to read, don't bother playing...really. You'll only get angry. Wait for Tera, which I will also play.
Immediacy is not this game's strong suit.
