Red 5 is no longer standing by, and in fact has launched its first salvo of proton torpedoes at a crowded MMO market by announcing the long-awaited Firefall title at last week's PAX Prime. The game, a massively multiplayer team-based shooter, will feature microtransactions and sport a free-to-play business model.
Red 5 made headlines earlier this year by laying off 30 developers, but looks to be back on its feet after a $20 million cash infusion from The9, a Chinese MMO publisher best known for Atlantica and Soul of the Ultimate Nation.
Firefall's developer roster features a number of Blizzard alums, as well as lead designer Scott Youngblood of Tribes and Tribes 2 fame. Check out the official website as well as a lengthy trailer after the cut.

Looks exactly like Borderlands this game and about as much of an mmo as that game was.
It even has the exact same cartoon graphics overlay borderlands have.

So you've played the game that was just revealed at PAX? Otherwise how could you possibly know how much of an mmo this game is or is not?
Just because it has the same style of graphics doesn't mean it is anything like Borderlands.
Otherwise I guess Gears of War is exactly like Unreal 3. Or L4D is exactly like Half Life 2.
Stop pretending you know anything about the game.

@Mirin - Thank you. You're my new friend. I vote "BACK IN MY DAY WE ONLY HAD ONE GAME TO CHOOSE FROM AND IT WAS PONG AND WE LIKED IT" as the official Massively disclamer.
Seems unless washes your naughty bits, it's just a copy of something. Games are supposed to be fun, a temporary excape from reality, not a new home.
Game looks fun. As it should be.

I personnaly think it's looks great...though I never played this Borderlands before. It seems really fluid and intense at the same time...which is a good thing, IMO - a lot of MMO's don't really have that now a days. And as for cartoony...well I guess you guys never played WoW before.
And if it wern't for the scary business model (and as long as I could roll something pink and pig-tailed that carries an awsome big pink gun), I might give it a whirl once been released.

And the font looks eerily similar to the StarCraft font.

@Utakata, whats wrong with it being F2P with Microtransactions? Surely you aren't against GW2 being F2P Microtransactions, or are you? I think we need to stop with this "F2P games suck" attitude, because so far GW2 looks to be one of the most promising MMOs coming out and nobody is bitching about how that game is f2p.

@Super Healer True, but I would call it F2P, because you don't have to pay a monthly fee. We have no idea if you have to buy a box for this game either. This game could be the next GW style game, and be as successful. This "F2P games suck" attitude is so people can justify not liking a game without really saying what it is. Most (not all) F2P games suffer from the items shop, they ruin it for a lot of people, but there have been a select few games that don't really suffer from the cash shops. Oh well, to each his own.

Here's the catch...

Look to have a level cap of about 250, microtransactions too many to number, and a big grind somewhere... oh... and your keys will probably be logged.
Looks pretty, though.

Nick you have a different view of F2P, or rather definition.
F2P, Free-2-Play, is exactly that. It requires ZERO investment to get started.
Guild Wars, as Alganon was and GA is now, is B2P, Buy-2-play, just like every console and pc Non-MMO game out there. It requires that initial investment, but other than that, you play for free.
Besides, there is a clear and obvious difference. GWs item shop, supplied only fluff items, the "skill unlocks" are actually the PvP portion of the games client, so you can just pvp if you want, and not pay extra for the rest of the game, if I understood right.
This game though, IS f2p, and on top of that, wants to include an item shop, and as obvious, will be PvP and as such, will obviously sell items that affect how well you do, just like every other f2p shooter out there.

Nick replied inpart:
"Surely you aren't against GW2 being F2P Microtransactions, or are you?"
Read what devilsei had to say about GW1 above me. Keep in mind and as far as we know, GW2 will be releasing the exact same model. This is quite different Nexon's and others F2P with MT model which Firefall is most likely going to be. So you're comparing apples to oranges, really.
"I think we need to stop with this "F2P games suck" attitude."
Read my reply above this thread, where I think this game looks great. Note, I never claimed that this Firefall would ever suck by using this model. It's because they are using this model that creates an unfair playing field based on personal income and not on skill, that I wish not be part of. So there's a big difference.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and think that that was a homage to HL2.

I dont usually like "cartoony" graphics but this looks quite good, a bit like Brink.
I just hope it has some progression and depth with features like other successful MMOs and isnt just "Alien Swarm in 3D", i.e. a shooter with nothing else to do except shoot things (I do like Alien Swarm by the way!)
The inventory/load out part in the video was interesting. I assumed it was a regular shooter like Global Agenda but it looks like changing gear acquired from loot results in an aesthetic change and there are hubs for missions etc, which would mean there are traditional MMO type features there which I like.
Bit early to tell but I will be looking out for further details on this game :)
