The coverage on this game is so rare it's good to see you acknowledge it, Beau.

For anyone interested, one of my favorite aspects is the potential to modify any demon's stat growths through the rebirth system. If you're attached to Jack Frost or the common Pixie you recruited in the start area and don't want to leave them by the wayside for some of the world ending demons later down the road, you don't have to, /and/ can be still be competitive in end-game. Also, the overwhelming majority of useful items are obtainable in mid to late game dungeons without having to spend a penny. It's always an option if you're exasperated (and you likely will be at some point) but it's never the only choice, even if a recently rectified decision for this to be the case otherwise -almost- made it so.

Be forewarned, however, any PVP fans: while there is a PVP battleground, it's a complete and total free-for-all without any remote semblance of balance. Level 30's will go up against level 97's and nothing is done in any way to go low level players a chance.

I tried this game once a few months ago, and I quit it after the first play session. Didn't get very far, only to the part where you get to tame your first demon. I really wanted to stay with the game, but I quit way too early - some day, I will give it another try.

If it's like any of the the single-player Shin Megami games a huge bump in difficulty compared to the average MMO ought to be expected.

This really isn't the type of game you go to if you PvP, really. Like Raze above said, it's fairly unbalanced and it's pretty obvious there's more focus on the parts outside of that.

That said, creepy and fun game. And free. It's worth a try, all in all.

Being a huge fan of the SMT series on consoles, I tried out this game last year. It is, on the surface, an Asian-grindathon. The first areas are smallish, boring, and filled to the brim with mobs pacing back and forth. However, it is true to it's SMT roots. It is deep and it is difficult. But even in your first few hours, you have more options open to you than most MMOs give you until the end of the game.

However, I don't think the majority of gamers will find it appealing. It felt like it was taking me forever to progress anywhere. You constantly run up against walls in the content and have to go back and grind. I'm used to this in from SMT games, but I never got into the community or grouping aspect enough to feel like the time I was investing was worth the effort.

This actually wasn't the first time I ever tried the game, but I logged in and played a bit this week to get a feel for it again after my long absence (last time I played was early 2009).

There's definitely some cool, unique stuff going on in this game. Capturing, combining, and leveling up the variety of creatures with their different skills definitely has enough content to keep you interested. Using one that complements your character's skills well is also definitely important since they are such a large part of your combat power.

I was not at all surprised when Beau mentioned Mabinogi, since I definitely see the similarities to that combat system here. Even enemies that you can kill very quickly pose a threat, since they can dispose of you with haste as well.

At times I feel like the controls are a little sluggish/frustrating, though I can't put my finger on exactly what it is. Maybe it's that I couldn't find any way to bind keys to strafe left and right, since that is my preferred form of movement.

I had some technical difficulties getting patched up, which is apparently so common that there are videos on Youtube dedicated to helping you fix your patching issues.

Overall, there's some cool stuff to see here and if any of it sounds interesting, the game is at least worth checking out.

I love SMT:Nocturne.
I love Persona 2/3/4 (though 2 really tries my patience).
I love SMT:Digital Devil saga.

But I stopped playing this after a few hours. I just can't get into it.

HOWEVER I support the series in whatever forms it takes! Thanks for covering Imagine Massively! :)

Well, I wasn't sure on the exact dates of anything, really. The problem is that nowadays a "closed beta" status (especially with FTP games) means only that the game is in testing, not that it is hard to get into.

I have heard that it might be as little as a day until it reopens, something I was confused about. I am going to contact the developers to clear it up.
