I'll be checking out the open beta tomorrow. Hopefully it isn't as much of a mess as I've read, but I'm not trying to be overly optimistic.

The game is still an abysmal mess. It never should have gone into OB, the less people know about its shoddy state, the better for sales. I guess SE enjoy shooting themselves in the foot.

It really isn't a "mess". Super annoying and almost impossible to figure out the UI and game mechanics? Yes, definately. A mess? meh.

Despite my recent comments on the beta (yes, the mouse controls and menu navigation are a HUGE pain in the ass), the game is very good.

It does need a THOROUGH tutorial, and it definitely needs menu hotkeys. Pressing "I" for "Inventory" and having my camera angle swing wildly is frustrating. I don't like playing cat & mouse with... well, my mouse, just to open my bags.

I suppose those are my biggest gripes. Tutorial and Navigation of the UI.

The cut scenes are pretty at least.... and... ummmm.... that's all I got for positives at this point.

Once you figure out the UI, or if you are coming from FFXI, it is actually very easy to navigate the UI. Personally, I prefer a more traditional interface, but square's isn't totally awful when you get used to it.

It looks like the download is going to take about 30 hours using the official launcher, I'm at 55% after 6 hours on the first patch. I tried torrenting and inputting the patches manually but that didn't work on my system for some reason. I'm cool waiting a couple days with this mess of a patcher for a beta but I'll be damned if I'm gonna put up with it at launch. Hopefully it will just install from the dvd and any patches that have to made will be finished in a reasonable timeframe.

What brakar said, uTorrent the meta file found in FFXIV's folder in your My Documents games folder.

On the subject of OB, it's pretty safe to say SE won't be getting a dime from me. Thank you for allowing me to test the game, however, this game is a huge disappointment in nearly every way except the music. Graphics are meh, UI and controls are horrendous, and the game has almost no content to enjoy, so a lot of time is spent mob grinding, which is a huge turn off for me.

I for one am very happy with the UI.
I have grown very tired of the WoW standard and was looking for something New and Simple.
Trust me, hitting your Home key and going through a menu is -extremely- simple and easy.
I find that the mouse is pretty pointless, which I guess is a matter of cultural difference, but then I heard the "elite" WoW players don't use a mouse either. That says something.
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, of course, the music is very final Fantasy-esque but it IS a Final Fantasy game so, big surprise.

My only gripe right now is very minor, and it's the rather limited number of characters you can fit in one "paragraph" when chatting. That and the inability (so far) to add additional Tabs to the Chat window. Far from game-breaking.

Elite WoW players *do* use a mouse... for the camera and movement. They trigger all of their abilities through binds and macros though (including multimouse binds thumb, thumb+ctrl, thumb+shift etc). So when you read an article about people "using the mouse" they mean triggering their abilities with a mouse, which is usually bad. Click-heals being the exception.

No one is saying navigating the menu is hard.

It's just pointless and annoying.

The mouse is a very important tool for this genre. I was at PAX today, and ToR, Rift and GW2 showed exactly why. You just feel more immersed then with a pad and a menu system that's littered with sub menus.

I'm looking forwards to more chat tabs too. Enjoying the OB so far, started in Ul'dah for a change and I can't help but gawk at the pretty everything in this game!

I'm somewhat bummed there still doesn't seem to be any NPC quests anywhere, but other then that I really love the atmosphere, if anything this is a great MMO for the explorer, the achiever maybe not so much.

- terrible p2p patcher takes eons to download a 5 meg patch.
- crashes if you run it full screen and alt-tab out
- software mouse is terrible and makes using a mouse utter hell
- ui is overly complex for no reason. ie) if i want to get some loot from something i killed i have to press home, goto inv, goto loot, select the item, something else here, move to bag. so 6 things i have to do instead of the standard shift+right click in almost every game these days.

i'm not gonna comment on content or game play because to be honest the mouse/ui issues ruin the game regardless.

I'm playing; enjoying and will sub when it's time.
I don't feel rushed to get anything done.
It's only going to get better.

FFXIV, like FFXI, is designed for a controller, plain and simple. This is why the UI is so "complex". The menus are built around layers so a controller doesn't have to scroll a huge list. In closed beta you couldn't operate any drop-down menus with a controller though, so at least they work now.

It doesn't crash when you alt tab, it closes itself. Even FFXI still does this, the only change is that SE allows you to run it in a window(not a borderless window though). For some dumb reason they did this so computer players wouldn't have an advantage, or so I've heard.

FFXIV has auto-loot, so the only time you have to go through the inventory screen is when your bag is full in the first place. So you don't even have to click. Makes me think of Mass Effect a bit. In WoW if your bag is full you have to open the loot window, check all your crap and see if anything is even worth looting then search through a few hundreds pieces of junk in your bags to drop. You can't just shift-click.

^5 for square designing a ui for a controller on a system that uses keyboards and mouse, will the ps3's ui be designed for touchscreens? that would make about as much sense.

didn't realize that it was "closing" when i alt-tabbed, that damn can't find direct-x error in an open window must of thrown me off.

sounds like you're just towing the line with what square has spouted off as their reasons for terrible design choices.

I'll admit i was wrong about the loot thing though, thought you had to go in and move it to be able to use it later. guess i missed the part of the tutorial that explained the separated inventories.

Works fine with my PS3 controller. Plays just like any normal console RPG would play. Fun game, can't wait for release! :)
