DDO's Update 7 is coming sometime in October, and we spent some time at PAX this morning chatting with members of the Turbine crew. They had some extremely exciting things to tell about Update 7 and sprung more than a few surprises on us. First up were the new races. Yes, that was plural. Half-orcs, the resident tough guys of Stormreach, are the coming race that players have been looking forward to, but Update 7 will also bring half-elves. Half-elves will be a very versatile race, with some special feats that make them ideal for solo builds.
Update 7 is bringing much more in addition to the two new races. There will be a 12-man raid at level 6, the first large raid suitable for players below level 10. It will be added to the Devil Assault Adventure Pack, so if you already own that one, you'll find it within that arc. Devil Assault will also gain epic mode with this update. The raid isn't the end of new content, of course. There's a new adventure pack coming, and this one's free! This level 12 quest arc will send you to solve the long-running mystery of Nat Gann's fate, and it may or may not involve time travel.
There are some updates coming to the UI and basic game that players will definitely enjoy. You'll find a slight change to the UI color, but that's not the best part. The inventory UI has an upgrade that will allow you to sort your items by type, making it much easier to keep things organized. You'll find tabs for each gear type, ingredients, potions, and more. And finally, the auction house got an update that should have DDO fans jumping for joy: search. That's right, Update 7 will bring string search to the auction house. You'll be able to search across categories, choose exact phrases, or be a little more general.
Engine upgrades to enable DX11 graphics, reactive water, hireling AI upgrades, bug fixes, and a few more special surprises round out this exciting update. Want to know more? Keep your eye on Massively -- we'll be taking an in-depth tour of Update 7 later this month!
[Update: To clarify, both of the new races will be available for purchase in the DDO Store.]

If they keep the updates going it should bring DDO back from the brink and up to AAA status.
More races are awesome, though I would assume they are only available if you buy them.

I'm sure the half-orcs will be F2P, but the Half-Elves will probably be VIP and purchase only. But you know, it would be nice if they added a race that was Premium & VIP, without a purchase option for F2P, but that's just me. :)

Yeah ... for a F2P, it seems every time I blink they have a new major update coming.

I would sat they are already past AAA status and easily the best f2p out there and as a sub game within the top 3 ( WoW obviously still on top and then the flavor of the month IE Aion conan warhammer etc pulling the #2 spot)
For a game that was considered dead a mere 18 months ago their growth has been amazing.
6 updates a year far surpasses WoW's content patches that seem to drop every 5 months on avg.
IMO Turbine is set to be the Top of the MMO world soon...I just hope that their partnership with Warner will lead to some new titles (Buffy MMO please)

You forget that there are many patches between the content patches for WoW, sometimes as many as 5. They are usually balancing patches or bugfixes (sometimes in the form of a hotfix) that are too small to require a whole patch number.
I do have to say that DDO is better than it's F2P competition, but it's still not on the level of WoW. It is however a nice time killer on Tuesdays during server maintenance or if I need a D&D fix. lol Oh, and compared to LotRO it's frigging amazing. I don't think LotRO has ever had a PvP balancing pass or really knows what it's doing as far as classes. Man, that game is boring. But, my current fav F2P game of all time is still Diablo 2. hehe

I would think that the two new races would get some racial enhancements that are unique to them. Half Elves probably get some of the enchantment resistance and such just like pen and paper.

Stock d20 Half-Elves are not all that attractive for power gamers. On the other hand, they are frequently requested by players because of their old-school D&D roots.
In Eberron they get the Mark of Storms.. that has some potential, and they may the best for certain caster or caster/melee builds that are currently rolled up as elves, since they'll be easier to give decent hit points.

Half-Elves get low-light vision, resistances to sleep, bonuses against enchantment spells, and a bonus to the perception check. However, they give up the extra Feat at the first level and extra skill point at each that humans get, which is kind of a big deal. The D&D rules are fairly well balanced while avoiding making any race too similar.

The good news is they are "closer than they will admit" to having druids done. Possibly for real this time, and if they do it properly the same tech will let them introduce Shifters.
Not much hope for gnomes or Kalashtar, but I can dream...

Druids would suck royally for a long while given a large portion of the game is set within the city proper. Going through sewers, dungeons, and warehouses kills a large amount of what Druids are good for.

Well now, why would they POSSIBLY mention that it might or might not involve time travel if it's not going to? You could rattle off a huge list of things an adventure might include but why would you do that? I mean that'd be like if they mentioned that it also might or might not involve cyborgs from outer space, clones, Master Chief and Michael Jackson. Why would you bring up the subject unless it's actually going to be involved? So, going to have to assume that time travel will be involved.
Thank goodness they are finally updating the AH, that feature has been a freaking embarrassment for years. Now we just need FE to do something about how clunky it's jump mechanism is...

Just to clarify, Turbine has said that both of the new races will be purchasable in the store (they won't be freebies). We've updated the original post with that information.
