"If you've been putting off picking up one of the many vanity items for sale, now would be a perfect time to add them to your collection."

Excelsior Class Ship isn't a vanity item, it's an item being sold with game play effects. The same effects they promised they never would sell in their store. Yeah they changed alright. *eyeroll*

Yeah...I saw the same nonsense arguements over at Behind The Mask column this week when it was giving an overly positive spin on the C-Store. The big claim being that stuff in the C-Store has no ingame play effects for CO...

...accept if you want to respec your toon, you have to purchases it threw the C-Store. Not like Wow, where you use ingame currancy. Not like CoH where you run ingame missions....but purchase it with real hard USD. The problem being other the obvious nickle and diming issue, is that anyone with a disposable income can "Retcon" themselves to whatever FotM till the cows come home, giving themselves considerable advantages over other players who can't afford it.

This is what infuriates me more than anything on the C-Store. And Cryptic and their apologists expects me to come back and play their game anyhow because they still think that's completely okay? I don't; I think that's horrible.

You get free respecs throughout the leveling process. And you can respec with ingame money. You do not need to buy respecs with real money at all.

Well that's good to know. I wasn't aware they had implemented that nor that Cryptic had adjusted the prices of retconning so you could fully respec ingame. I haven't played since Decemeber...and I can assure you, none of those features where ingame when I left. So there's a partial retraction on my part regarding that, to bring me up to speed.

However, the part...and still my main isssue contention of retconning available in the C-Store still holds. That is, it still effects ingame play. And it should not be there.

I'm a very pessimistic person; and yet I've managed to hold a lot of faith in Cryptic. Not so much for their track record, but more for hopes that Champions would outshine CoH. They ended up delivering a game that only entertains me due to how accurately I can portray my personal heroes. So far, I've had infinitely more success than with in CoH. However, I can only ignore the fact that all I'm really playing is a shallow WoW quest grinder clone for so long. This C-Store nonsense is getting out of hand. They keep making new content and just shipping it straight to their damn store and it's finally started to tick me off. I tried being nice, Cryptic, but you just kept pushing it. It's 50 times worse over in Star Trek where EVERYTHING is sent straight to the C-Store. They just don't get it... I don't want these games to flop; Champions especially because I do not wish to return to boring, old City of Fanfics.

CoH had content and team play, but at the same time it was the same monotonous thing from start to finish. As a matter of fact, I think CoH's only redeeming quality for me near the end of my play cycle was teaming through the big instances. My only driving force in Champions is to perfect my character (attacks, appearance, etc.). I felt no reason to keep playing CoH since I only technically had TWO real powers per character (you just use them in different ways, like how broadsword is really just swinging the same sword in a number of unique ways). That and the invention system drove me into insane fits of OCD.

Sigh, dammit, Cryptic. Get on the freaking ball and do your jobs. Stop churning out games a mile a minute and FIX WHAT IS BROKEN in your current games. Come off your high horse and admit your faults as well as your plans to remedy your errors. Give people a real reason to play your games or risk losing everybody to SOE and Bioware. Dammit, I do not want to resort to playing Sidekicks Online and Star Wars: The Text Adventure

I am happy with the c-store. I play STO and am a lifetimer. Any money I would have saved I always end up spending in the c-store.

They have to put this stuff in there, otherwise it wouldn't be there, they have to justify spending money to make it, so they sell it.

The argument with 'game changing items' such as the excelsior is silly. You can get ships of equal or greater power I'm game. The ships do NOT give you an advantage, other than catering to your play style.

I still get raped by escorts, and they aren't off the c-store.

In my opinion this article is disingenuous, this article is just another excuse to stir the pot about MT-transactions in CO because this is not breaking news at all, the party is over halfway through in Champions-Online.

Massively has already explored MT-transactions in the CO feature "Behind the Mask: Two layers of Toppings" (with over 60 replies).
Give it a rest Massively!, there is nothing said here about CO that was not explored in said article by Patrick Mackey just the day before last.

Someone on the staff at Massively has really got a bee in their bonnet about CO MT, well get used to it, the models here to stay whether we like it or not, bitching about it or dressing up feature articles with the hidden intention of stirring the pot on a well-worn topic is fooling no-one.

Uh... No. The model is not here to stay if we don't like it.

If you don't like MTs + Subscription, DON"T PAY FOR THE GAME. Sorry to shout, but seriously. If people just stopped giving Cryptic their money, Cryptic would change business models.

I don't mean to be attacking, but I think your statements are foolish. One of the most powerful things you can do is vote as a consumer. Where you spend your money will directly affect what you can buy in the future. If you shop at Safeway stores, there will be more in the future. If you buy crappy food, they will ship more and more of it your way. But if you shop at locally owned co-ops, more of those will spring up. If you buy locally grown organic food, more will be available at better and better prices.

The only reason microtransactions will stay in Cryptics business model is the fact that you are foolish enough to buy into it.

I understand what you're reting to say Brian, but there is nothing foolish about it. There is not some big socialist agenda we're working towards in MMOs, some people will like a title, some won't. I happen to like Champions and if there is MT content that will suit my characters and i have some free cash I am more than willing to spend on it. That doesn't mean I don't vote with my wallet, that doesn't mean i don't recognise value for money on a c-store or super-booster because i do and have specifically NOT bought packs because i didn't consider them value for money content-wise - CoH's 'party' booster being the latest example.

Freedom of choice works both ways Brian and if i want to support CO as a title by buying in-game stuff for my toons than I am happy to have that option.

If you don't want to support their c-store.... don't!. Either way both of us i'm sure are keeping an eye on the plain standard updates and watching that for value for money and judging the game thus.

And yay for being drawn into yet another pointless & biased C-store debate, .... like Cryptic is the only MMO to do MT right?.
Christ!, you wait till the Bioware MT/DLC hits, they'll be the next FOTM developer to pick on re: MT.

I give it 3 days to a week before we have another Massively microtransactions feature that just HAPPENS to pick on Cryptic.
Why don't you pick on how crappy value for money NCsoft' party pack is?, or WoW's $25 sparkly mount?.
