Holy crud. Worst UI ever. In a world filled with bad UIs, this one takes the cake.

Design is horrible but you could probably live with that if it didn't lag like crazy.

Also, I had forgotten just how annoying a game with no jumping is.

Yeah and if you say ANYTHING remotely close to questioning the UI, you get fanboi jumped in game. All I did was ask "Is there a hardware mouse setting?" (that's it, that's all I said) and I got the wrath of the fanboiz descending upon me about how great the UI is and how it doesn't need a hardware mouse toggle *groans*. I hope this isn't indicative of the future community aspects of the game...

PS - I cleaned up their reaction for posting, the fanboiz were NOT nice to me at all, they were very rude in fact, because I dared ask if there was a hardware mouse setting, and obviously nothing can be done wrong in the world of Final Fantasy, so their floaty mouse setting is perfect and it's just me.

You get no sympathy Mewmew, I've seen your comments on these articles, you can't possibly tell me you didn't know about the no hardware mouse, AND thus knowing you would also know how unbelievably sick and tired the community is of hearing how superior the mouse is to a controller when that's not how these games have been designed since time immemorial.

Quit your fishing for rage and move the hell on. For those who don't know the FF community is touchy about subjects like mouse/keyboard control/ WoW / soloists.. ect.. So beware when asking in general.

Any MMO player with any experience knows to handle general chat with kid gloves as well, don't be silly.

I got my open beta code and added the service to my account last night. Then this morning I tried to log into the game and it told me I needed to add the service. I checked my SE account and it didnt have the FFXIV service. When I tried to get add it again, it said the beta code was already used. I tried to app again and it said I already was approved and it sends the same code. :(

Every day i become increasingly glad i did not pre-order this game. Especially not the CE i was thinking about getting.
If this is the mark of the service we're to expect, this will be one worth passing on. Combine this with the utter sham they are passing off with the fatigue system (aka square-enix enforced player progression limit) and, yeah...

I've been downloading the game for i dunno 12-15 hours now and im only 35% done. WTF is up with that? Half the time it reads 0.0 as my DL rate. Then they can't get their website to work well enough to accept new betas, even though most of us probably applied months and months ago? Why couldn't they just have had it send out codes to anyone who already signed up but didn't receive a code? Oh wait, logic + mmo = does not compute, i forgot.

Anyway, HOPE to see the game some time before launch, but not holding my breath at this point.

I'm playing this game to see if I will remotely like it and my friends from Final Fantasy XI whom I left, will be playing this game. So far I can't set up the controls I want used in the game, I'm using a PlayStation 2 Dual Shock controller attached to Super Dual Box Pro (this might have to change).

I'm a controller PC based user unless, the game requires clicks of the mouse for movement which isn't all that much of a problem to me. Though I will always prefer controller for role-playing games. I've tried the W, A, S, D and 8, 4, 2, 6 keys and find my fingers cramp up a bit quickly especially when I have to hold down two keys just to make a turn. The response time with the keyboard and mouse is annoyingly slow. I like the graphics it's actually crisp and clear, the same couldn't be said about Final Fantasy XI (since the PC version was a PlayStation 2 port).

Due to not my controller not working properly (yes I have installed the driver for it, but I'm windows 7 and that could be a problem as why the game can't fully pick up the keys), I'm unable to explore the game. I want to test out the battle system and other things.

If you are using a console controller through an adapter, you might need a program like Xpadder or Joy2Key to get the inputs recognized. The game configuration seems to work natively with Wireless (RF/Bluetooth) and USB Controllers.

Windows 7 64 bit. Nothing strange or interesting. I meet all requirements listed on the installation thread on the beta test game guide site. The weird thing is that I have tried this now on like 3-4 different computers and I get the same deal.

Another thing that was strange was that the Version Config application did nothing. I tried to open it at home, but nothing happened...

I have heard several things about possible causes for problems:

1). Maybe something to do with not using up-to-date graphics card drivers

2). Maybe something to do with opening/not opening the file in administrator mode

3). ???

I managed to get a key in the last moments, all of yesterday to get it downloaded..

but it looks like my graphics card has reached end of life..even on low settings it still struggles..

So weekend plan has changed to buy a new video card! then play ffxiv as much as the beta allows me.

However from what ive seen, I like, so maybe ill even pre order it on the weekend.

@ Syesta, thank you so much for that information, I would have been stuck wondering why I couldn't use a controller over keyboard & mouse. I will get on it, I'm tired of using the keyboard controls. If those two programs won't work then I will have to use some money and purchase an actual USB controller.

all i have to say is SE is royal screwing themselves over. u don't have open beta then deny basically everyone due to your lack of planning. that alone shows how bad they failed to plan. no more pre-order from me due to there lack of planning and lack of information giving to there fan base.

I don't really know how you do it but I went from eagerly anticipating this game to hating it in less than a week and I havent even played it. You can throw whatever beta excuses you want against the wall but the simple fact is that this was a poorly planned and executed prelude to a game.

First impressions are really hard to overcome.

And another person who was gawked at how terribly this was handled.

This was terribly planned and I'm just sighing, I really wanted to give this game a test. but with its crappy handlement with just getting sign up for beta.

Also from what I'm hearing there following there crappy FFXI control route, I ditched FFXI because of its crappy handling with its system.

Also its horrible to level in the game.

All I'm going to say is that I had hoped they were going to update the UI over FFXI. The only complaint I ever had about that game was the UI, it was trash and defending it is ridiculous because all you are saying is "I can live with it, so you should learn to as well". Well...actually I don't have to, and no one else has to either.

As far as the WoW clicky clicky comments; clearly you haven't played or just don't understand. In WoW any decent player macros every single spell to a key near WASD, using A and D to strafe and the CAMERA is controlled by the mouse. Of course if you want to click on everything you can do that too, because you have the choice.

I sent off for my code, and got it like in the same minute.
i can imagine how many people are trying right now to update, and it is taking ages for me to, at 15kbs atm... they should ease off on the updating, beta will end soon, and most of us wouldnt of had the chance to play it

Got in, tried it, hated it. This game has been scratched off my list. If I wanted to play FFXI again I'd reinstall Playonline and download that client. I played FFXI hardcore for about 5 years. The graphics are astonishing and the music is awesome. However, the interface feels like a step backwards in design. I will be passing on this game while I wait for something better.
