Players anticipating Final Fantasy XIV got to play an exciting new game starting last night, which is currently being dubbed "hoping that the server connection doesn't reset while applying for open beta." The servers have been wheezing under the load of people trying to log in, but luckily, some players have managed to get in and obtain crucial information. FFXIVCore has put together a compilation of the more interesting tidbits, including the now-known server names and the notes for the latest and greatest patch.
While the closed beta servers were named for the bosses of the Final Fantasy series, the open beta servers (and the assumed launch servers) are named for famous cities from the games. This beta also had changed the previously homogenized stats of the races to differentiate racial choices -- but with the differences only being a few points in any direction, there's no huge impediment to playing any class as any race. Take a look at the full patch notes for a rundown of changes if you were in the prior beta, and keep trying if you find your registration attempts getting disconnected. Apparently there's no shortage of eager Final Fantasy XIV fans.
Update: Square-Enix has posted an official message on the account page advising players that the servers are heavily congested, and that if you're having any technical troubles to please wait and try back later. Codes are currently being limited in an effort to fight server congestion. The full statement is after the break.
"We would like to take this opportunity to provide an update regarding the congestion of the Square Enix Account Management System.
Due to heavy server traffic, we are continuing to experience Square Enix Account Management System congestion. Currently, players may not be able to log into the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, or acquire registration codes for the game.
Our technical staff is monitoring the situation closely and working to resolve this issue. As a countermeasure to the congestion, we are currently limiting the acquisition of registration codes for the Open Beta Test. If you cannot acquire a registration code, or if you are unable to access the Square Enix Account Management System, we ask that you please wait and try again later.
We apologize for any inconvenience."

Depends on how the vote on the RP server goes. That vote finishes up tonight.

The RPC vote is still ongoing. Lindblum is currently leading the vote, with Besaid in second.

I have an Open Beta Key. I have been trying to download the client for days now and the max speed has been 10kbs down while amazingly my upload speed never drops below 50kbs....
I am registered and all that good stuff, but, I can not log into the testers page. It tells me my log in info is wrong.
It did accept my log in info once, but, said I was logged in under some random name and then another random name and now I can not log in again.....
Why does anything involving SE have to be so darn painful.....

I never had an issue with any of it except the website congestion.
It took about an hour and a half for the full thing to download as I was getting 1.2mps on average. It did get a little wishy washy, sometimes going down to 750kbs and shooting back up to 1.3mps.
I did notice that if I wasn't highlighting the downloader application that it went smoother.
Maybe your ISP is throttling you because of how it downloads.

If you search for where the game puts the torrents, you can download them in your own torrent client, and for whatever reason doing it that way gives you reasonable speeds rather than the pathetic whimper the official downloader gives you.
People have put up the files at mirrors too, such as MegaDownload, but if you want to download more than one file there every few hours you need a paid account (I actually did that, was only $10 for a month and I got to get the game at full download speed finally).
There's a post at Core telling ways to get the client faster, check it out (if it lets me post it here)

If not, do a search for FFXIV megaupload torrent link install instructions.

Hear that? That's the sound of a million pre-orders being cancelled.

I could not connect at all, and I was refreshing five to ten minutes before the application link appeared at the bottom of the page. All I ever got for the next five hours was the "server error" page, urgh... Must've opened that link three thousand times in that time, and no dice. So disappointing! I expected a cluster-you-know-what, but I had hoped I'd at least get through before they stopped accepting!
And even right now... still saying server error! D'oh!

For me it's not even just that (I've been in since the Alpha for christ's sake, though), it's that I was never even able to reach a page that informed we that my quest to access the denial page was futile-- let alone the acceptance page.

They tell you to follow the instructions in the email they sent yesterday.
Step one: Use the regular Beta appliaction site, and get a key instantly.
C'mon man.

this morning at 6am EAST, the BETA signup worked perfectly. I even managed to play a little before heading to work.
If you can't get in, try during wee hours.

Even if they (wisely) have seperate servers for info/login then once the login gets overloaded everyone (as described in comments above) starts spamming refresh on the info servers and they're toast.
Patience.
The price of Internet popularity.

"You are not prepared!"
Sadly they are no where near ready for launch. And yet another company will learn the cruel fate that awaits any who dare launch before they are ready.
The whole pain of trying to get a key could have been avoided easily. Almost everyone who wanted a key had registered and got an email stating that open beta was starting. How hard would it have been to just include the open beta key in those emails? Then you would only have the hand full of new apllications to deal with. I fear most will be disappointed once they get a key and get the client, if they don't give up in rage first, but epic fail on SE's part to handle things like they did.
