"Never believe what you read online."

I read this online.

Oh god, I looked at the trap, Ray! Reality is collapsing! I'm my own grandpa!

This is basically how I feel about movies - I don't really bother with anyone's opinion anymore. I once read a negative review of a movie, and later saw that movie by chance. I realized the reviewer had completely missed out on the point of the movie and haven't read a review since. The endorsements of my trusted friends will convince me to see a movie I thought looked uninteresting, but any movie I want to see, I will see, regardless of how bad it's made out to be.

I think games are even more so personal in that everyone is looking for different things out of games. I once watched a reviewer's video (I think it was of Zentia?) on another MMO site. He was saying that the game wasn't challenging enough and he thought "Americans" (an unfair grouping) liked a challenge whereas "Asians" (another diverse group of people being unfairly categorized) didn't want to be challenged, they wanted to socialize. The way he said this made "Americans" seem somehow better than "Asians."

Anyway, I could rant on about how that makes me angry, but instead I'll just say this. If I had listened to that reviewer and not played Zentia because he thought he wasn't a very good game, I'd have missed out something that is truly enjoyable for other reasons than being a difficult challenge.

Well said, and I definitely agree!

Any suggestions for someone looking to check out a "misfit" game?

Wow -- I lost my comment along with that link! lol Anyway, you can find a few in that column of mine.

As for sources, I use mainly gaming forums and YouTube. Clever searches have come up with more than anything. Also, the normal sources -- press releases and contact from readers.

You need a lot of room on your hard drive, as well. I have about 50 MMOs between the two PCs, not including browser based, iPod and IPhone games, and games I have deleted (most of them were playable and fun, but just not enough to stay on the hard drive.)

Good luck!

Reading this makes me nostalgic for my olden days of randomly carousing Asian MMOs. This was Circa 2003/2004-ish, before every Korean game required a KSSN to register, In between sessions of FFXI, I'd randomly stumble across and try out a number of free online games. Four of which stood out to me:
Headlock's The Belle-Isle
NeoWiz's Yogurting
Phantagram's Shining Lore
Hudson's Master of Epic
I have no idea if these games are still operating (well, I know Shining Lore got shut down), but even for small-scale, flawed games, most of which were in a language I didn't grasp fully back then, they had an original charm about them, and they were *fun to play.* They left an impression on me, on how I approach modern MMOs, and my patience when confronted by a game with potential.

No lie, I had no knowledge of Korean, and I played KR Yogurting for like 2 years...

Every dog has its day. There are a lot of MMOs going under the radar that just need a chance to win you over.

a extremely little known gem that is QUITE different, is

Valkyrie Skye

it is free2play, and is a vertically scrolling action shooting MMO. think of Galaga, and more modern games of that type. thats what the gameplay is like. but it has most normal MMO features.

I use reviews as a way to gauge the content of the game, usually. I listen to the opinion but I don't necessarily go by it. Of course there are a few people who I trust and their opinion counts, however it does not keep me from trying out a game (Or movie, or book or whatever.) If someone asks my opinion, I usually say "Well this is what I think, your mileage may vary." Unless they are out side of the USA, then I say their Kilometer usage may vary XD.

I like trying new things. Sometimes you find a gem you didn't realize was under that big pile of moss...

Your advice is sound, the easiest way to sour on any given MMO is to just read the forums.
