Most Final Fantasy XIV fans were looking forward to the game's open beta tomorrow, but unfortunately they're going to have to wait a bit longer.
FFXIV's open beta application site went down for a period of time early this morning, and when it came back up, it included an announcement regarding open beta. A "confirmation of critical bugs" is all we've heard so far, but whatever the problem is, it's serious enough to warrant postponing the open beta testing.
There's not a new date yet, but the announcement says that "a new schedule will be released at a later date." No word on what this means for the September 30th launch date, if anything.
[Thanks Justin!]

In before all the people freaking out over the delay. FFXIV is doomed! I'm canceling my pre-order, etc.

Good to see a company doing what they need to before releasing something. I can wait a little longer.

Hey, it's more than what most companies would do. Good for them.

lol @ Jason.
While dissapointed, I can only hope they'll be back on track soon.
At least I have PS3 castle crashers to tide me over.

Oh noes! Major bugs detected! *brrzt*
- the controls are borked
- the PS3 version is delayed half a year
- the Fatigue system is telling people how they should play the game
- there's guildleves every two days, and in between, all you can do is grind
The only real bug is the game itself. I wonder why they even wish to release this outside of Japan.

This might be related to issues with the implementation of the new SE Accounts management system.
The maintenance window was extended twice, and took almost 8 hours instead of the usual 2-4.
Hopefully they get all this situated soon, but I'd rather they make sure this is all situated now, as opposed to running into "critical" issues after going live.

After being in the closed beta I'm hoping they did a LOT of work between the end of closed beta and the start of open beta because the game did not appear to be anywhere near ready for open beta or the scheduled release at the end of the month.
I was a bit saddened by the state of the game and how clunky it felt for a Final Fantasy product.
Here's to hoping it's improved when it comes up.

It's more like, "Oh, two foot ravine, I can waste 10 minutes walking around it or jump over it now. No, wait, my feet are stuck to the ground."

There are so many problems with this game, I'm amazed that they're even thinking of starting open beta let alone trying to release it in 2010.
SquareEnix seem to want to rush this game and release it when it's no where near finished.
Once open beta starts, I'm sure that many will be very disappointed.

no biggie.. I'll just play more GW, however I was thinking just this morning about my experience in closed beta and wondering if they were really going to be ready for prime time in under a month, then I fired up Massively and saw this article.
