We all intend to be nice to the newer players, really we do. It's not as if anyone forgets that we were new at one point, not knowing our aft launcher from our elbow in Star Trek Online. And yet for some reason, after the right barrage of questions about how you loot things in Final Fantasy XI, where you can get travel powers in City of Heroes, or how to train pistols in Fallen Earth... well, eventually you just snap. You give someone advice that isn't just bad -- it's malicious.
Almost every veteran has done it at least once, ranging from assuring a player that the dragon is totally soloable to explaining that black dye is cheap and unwanted. So what's the worst thing you've ever pulled over on a new player? Was it something that got the character killed, or even worse, something that forced the player to throw away what could have been a long-term benefit? And in the unlikely event that you don't have a cruel sense of humor, have you ever been on the receiving end?

While questing in WOW with some good friends, their older brother jumps online for the first time. We were walking him to Ironforge for the first time and as a joke
I told my buddy that a shortcut to Ironforge involved jumping off the side of a mountain... my jaw hit the ground when he cleared the wooden fence and fell to a horrible death. I didn't stop laughing for 10 mins. Tears still come to my eye thinking about it. BTW, he became a hardcore raider and his wife (whore) started cheating on him with a neighbor - TRUE STORY.

Wow - the Arena
At lvl 70 me (leshar) and my buddy Kurantmah used to gank anyone alliance or horde who would try and steal the chest in the arena. It was hilarious one shotted noobs and interupt bums trying to get the garbage loot in the chest. One time in particular, this ass was going for the chest. What he didn't know was that for the next 30 mins he was going to get owned OVER And OVER. One shot kill. Then when he turns into a ghost, I would put a trap on his corpse. Then my buddy the priest would rez him and bamm, frozen popsicle - Only to get taunted until he unfroze, then hamstrung the died again by my friend the mage. Good times.

It might be sad, but in my short maplestory time, I ran around telling people to look at my wish list, which only featured a husky pet.
At the time, there was some kind of bug that made you disconnect when you looked at a wishlist that included one of those little furballs.
So I ran in town and said: "Guys, look at my wishlist!"
And *poof*, *poof* , *poof*, off they went, not knowing what happened.
Ah, good times!

Sent one into the crystal caves on dantooine once, another into nightsister camp in SWG. Told quite a few people to shout "I am a Jedi" in front of storm troopers, and imperial probe droids. I used to leave my Jedi hidden in a guild hall, while i used my alt to trick BHs into sending their droids after it. Since the name only had 1 letter difference. Some even tried calling CSRs. Old SWG was so open ended, it really made pranks easy.
Sent a few noobs straight into Stitches in duskwood. Pranks are a bit hard to setup in WoW, since so many don't have a clue in the first place.
One of the cruelist things I've seen are the people who send fake afk tells to people in BGs in WoW. Never done that myself though.

Any EQ2 Nagafen player should know what "Monkey Business" is by now. It's a meme there.
