Probably cause its more like a pyramid scheme than a game. Client is free to download but to do anything fun ingame, like killing a mob, you need to either spend real cash for ingame cash or devout hours to tedious grinding/gathering. At anytime I believe you can convert ingame cash back to real currency, so in theory you can make money playing this game, but if people were actually making $ the developer would have gone out of business. All items cost real $ including ammo and everything has durability, this "game" is potentially the biggest money sink there is.

It used to be called Project Entropia, but was renamed and the graphics engine was upgraded to the Crysis engine.

There is money to be made, but I think you have to be a pretty savvy property developer to do it. For the normal player I think even $15/mo is not enough to pay for gear to hunt since gear wears out quickly. There is always the possibility of getting a nice drop and striking it rich, so for the average player it is more of a casino where the devs have tight control over the payout.

I have never played it tho, so grain of salt!

The name of the game was changed a few years back, a long time before the CryEngine was added to the game, exactly 1 year ago.

How exactly do you make the money? Kill mobs for drops? The game sounds pretty interesting

There are lots of 'professions' you can choose, hunting, mining, crafting, trading, even hair dresser ;). Every profession has the potential to make you some money, but don't expect that. Take a look at the forum in my other post.

I am not here to start a flame war or bash this game, BUT to be warned this game can easily suck down $60 per month and you will barely have anything to show for it. There are people who deposit hundreds per month and are not seeing much for it. Razer sounds like he/she is wanting to mentor you and that helps, but just be forewarned that the grind in this game redefines the word and whatever you decide, stick with it because changing professions will in effect start you from scratch... Hunting is fun the first 300 mobs, but that hardly gets you any leveling.. Kill 3,000 mobs, still hardly anything. 10,000 mobs killed, you have barely gone up at all. Meanwhile your armour takes damage which costs real money to repair. You can easily burn through $10 worth of ammo/repairs in a day/weekend. Rarely you will get that rare kill which nets you enough money to maybe upgrade your weapon or some armour, but guess what, that new upgraded stuff costs more to repair/shoot. You see and hear about people all over that have just shot some awesome animal worth tons of PED, or mined some rare ore that netted them thousands, but then when you see these people who did that, they are way higher than you usually and it makes you wonder how many thousands of dollars they spent to get that high...

[edit]
If you don't expect to be rich withing a few weeks (or at all) it is a great game with a very nice community of mature people. You can play a lot of different ways, depositing large amounts of money and gambling with it for some big loot, hunting huge creatures, or you can deposit a little money and just hunt small mobs with as much fun but a lot less risk, or don't deposit any money an grind for it and hunt small creatures with that money. This will then all be free game time, sure this can be boring, but hey it is free ;). To get some info on the game check out the forums about it, www.entropiaplanets.com and www.entropiaforum.com. The game is pretty hard to learn in the beginning, o you should ask lost of questions if you try it. But once you know how stuff works it is a pretty nice game. I have played almost 6 years now and are not planning to quit any time soon.

True, but $15 like you pay on a lot of MMO's can take you a long way if you hunt small creatures like Daikiba, Snable Snot and Exarosaur without armor or with cheap armor like Pixie.

Well if you don't have the self control to not deposit lots of money than it can be expansive, but it is all up to you if and how much you deposit. I deposit to almost every month and yes the money is gone by the end of the month, but I know that in advance and I really don't play very smart and don't care about loosing the money. I don't mind paying for my gaming fun.
