If you're a Final Fantasy XIV fan and didn't score a closed beta key in the past weeks, you've likely been poring over all of the testing news -- both good and bad -- to keep up with the progression of closed beta.
There's nothing quite like seeing and experiencing it all firsthand, however, and soon you'll have the chance to do just that. This morning's tweet from Square Enix announced that closed beta phase three will be ending this Wednesday, the 25th, and open beta is set to begin in early September.
There's not a specific start date yet, but keep an eye on Massively -- we'll let you know as soon as there is!

I feel you there. A few friends of my were in closed beta. They've already canceled their preorder. As they have similar interest as I do, I will probably do the same depending on what I see in the beta.

Yeah open beta is a mistake for them. This game is a huge disappointment. If SE would actually listen to the beta testers, and I don't know, update the game to 2010 standards, it would be okay. As it stands, the only people who will be interested in this game, are the people who played FFXI. And even then, it's missing a lot of the well frankly put, quirky charm that game had.
I guess if the camera and UI were not such a mess the game would be a bit better. But it is still a MMO in the mould of punishing the player in order for a tiny amount of advancement. Which to me, frankly just puts me off a game. Make a game fun, make the story enthralling. You will keep me around a lot longer then making me play 2 months grinding out simple quests to level and only being able to do it once every 48 hours.
I Love SE games, but FFIV is sadly not a game I will enjoy. I think if SE really wants to develop a MMO for more then just the Japanese market they have a whole lot of work to do.

@Logan I would gladly give you my account if I could so you could try it out. I like saving people money.
I was at the beginning area with several people around me trying to figure out how to open the gate :)

@Joker
I don't play WoW but I do have respect for how its accessibility.
I'm not the only one that thinks this game blows. I'm glad you love it so much I'm not the only one complaining about how it plays, its UI, stupid quest set ups, walls of text and it uses software mouse(lol). Those are just a few of the issues.
I gave it a shot and the game failed to show promise of being anything except a timesink and frustration generator.

@xslipperyx. Well it is a Beta, lol.
A brand new game's Beta is going to have bugs like these.
Not sure why there are so many people that don't understand this.
It's also a VERY limited Beta.
I had enough "quests" to last me 48 hrs, the 8 + all the crafting ones and everyone in my LS has some to do too.
It's a social game and you're not playing it right unless you have a LS and are partying up with people.
The game has 29 Days 11 Hours 42 Minutes and 60 Seconds for bugs to be fixed.

Speaking as a closed beta tester, I can say that I will not care about the open beta.
It's a shame about this game.

Sucks, doesn't it?
I can't say that I've been more disappointed with a game than I have FFXIV. They paid no attention to things that worked well in other MMOs. I'm sure the diehard FF lovers will stick with it but other than graphics, it offers nothing over FFXI.

@xslipperyx. Not every game needs to be exactly the same.
I'm happy it's an improved version of FFXI and not just another WoW clone.
I'm glad that so many stupid and weak minded people are not going to be playing, one of the greatest things about FFXI was the community.
It's an awesome game if you actually play it rather than whine about it online.

@Joker Now that's the super fanboy crap I remember from the beta forums:)
You know they make games to make money right? you understand that the game as it is now will only attract a tiny tiny percentage of the overall MMO market. And you know it is because of a few pretty simple fixes (Soften the leveling curve, remove stupid time limits, an actual working UI and camera for the PC, an auction house and not the goofy half working bazaar system.).
With people like you in the "community" it's no wonder people get scared off of FFXI. And I doubt 14 will fair any better.

Hmm that's nice. I haven't signed up nor played the closed beta, but I'd like to give this game a try just because it's Final Fantasy. Reading artictles and forum posts from testers make it seem like it's not a good idea to invest money in this game in its current state... Which is a shame seeing how many faithful players FFXI had.
Oh well. I'm sure there will be atleast a couple of days of free fun in Open Beta for new players :)

Lol, if they do things the other MMOs are doing, they would be called WoW clone or just another MMO out there, but if they try something different, they would be called not paying attention to other MMO.
Sigh..
Sigh..
