The speculation has been going on for quite a while, and it's finally been confirmed: The Neverwinter Nights MMO is coming.
Well, sort of. Neverwinter will be developed by Cryptic, and Gamespot was lucky enough to get a little one-on-one time with COO Jack Emmert. Something that he was careful to point out was that this is not a full-blown, persistent MMO: "I wouldn't say MMORPG at all -- Neverwinter is a cooperative RPG."
The Neverwinter site is up and running, with plenty of interesting details about the game. It's based on 4th edition D&D, set for launch in 2011, and is inspired by R.A. Salvatore's upcoming trilogy. The first book in that series arrives in October, so by the time Neverwinter launches, the world should be fully established.
For the time being, Cryptic and Atari have provided a fair amount of resources for hopeful (and skeptical) fans to keep up with development. The official site contains a newsletter signup page, some brief backstory, and the full press release. You can also follow game news on Twitter and Facebook.

Should I be pleased?

If you don't want to be disappointed, then no. I suggest being very, very skeptical that they will be able to make a fun game.
I hope they do pull it off and make a fun game for once, but I won't be holding my breath nor waiting intently for this to release. These guys have burned too many bridges to be given the benefit of the doubt anymore.

Your right, They didn't make City of Heroes/City of Villains, which are fantastic games. Hell depending on who you talk to Champions Online exceeds CoX. Lets not give credit where due...

So they made a good game a decade ago? I'm thinking STO is still in most people's minds. If not, it should be.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
Finally a MMO set in the Forgotten Realms and Cryptic gets to develop it? I am so sad right now.... Why, why, why wouldn't they work out a deal with Bioware on this one?

Hmm lets see... The Neverwinter IP going to the publisher/developer team everyone doesn't want to touch it, based on the works of R.A. Salvatore who is actually working on another MMO title atm... at least they're calling it a CO-OP RPG and not an MMO.
I will be shocked if more than 50k people buy this game considering what a clusterf**k year it has been for Cryptic/Atari.

IGN just posted their article about it and it says it's for up to 5 players in online co-op. Doesn't sound like an MMO to me...

If it's not an MMO then what's the point? I highly doubt Mythic is going to do better than the toolset that came with the original Neverwinter Nights (and NWN 2) which allowed you to play cooperatively WITH a GM.

....My fears have been confirmed...what a total nightmare. I love the Neverwinter setting I think for co op RPG in the neverwinter setting I'll stick with the original NWN game's online features.
Cryptic scared off / ripped off the Champions Community and then have slowly been hitting the self destruct button on Star Trek. Do I really want another P2P Cash shop game labeled as a co op online RPG? Hell No.
I'll have to keep dreaming of a Neverwinter Online game...that'll never happen...this one will be a complete abomination. If you want a D&D Online game DDO is a decent experience.

It looks like a key selling point of Neverwinter is going to be player generated content from launch. It'll be interesting to see how well that works out (given that history indicates the difficulty of doing something like that successfully).
