I actually purchased Alganon a while back and even bought enough points to get a mount (hey, I'm impatient!). I gave it a go because the world artwork appealed to me, and because I heard it was aspiring to be similar to WoW. I'm not much of a "gamer" (I only really play WoW), so I have no idea what the whole Derek Smart issue is about. So this is an outsider looking in. I have played WAR (up to level 16) and AoC (up to level 25), so I do have some comparison to go by.

Playing the game, the artwork for the world itself is beautiful. The early quests aren't too bad. They start to feel like a grind around level 7 though. The dungeons (early dungeons anyway) are short, which is a good thing. My problems with the game (and the reason I stopped playing are: the combat is ridiculously wonky. Not just slightly bugged, I'm talking mobs would get stuck, and there were even some bugs were my health wouldn't deplete at all while the mob was attacking me. The combat animations are horrendous. The character animations (and art) are horrible. The previous reviewer that stated it's like controlling cardboard is right. Two races to choose from? Lame. The UI? Customizable or not, the look of the stock version is less than amateur work. I could go on, but I won't.

They need to do something to make the game appealing if they're going to survive. It's not about Derek Smart or whatever, it's that the game plays like an early beta. There's no "hook" like the other giant MMOs have. It has a very "grindy" feel very early on. I'm sorry, but I just can't play this game at this point. It needs a lot more work.

LOL...seriously?

1. Hi to 3/4's of all the new posters that found just this article who also just happened to find this great new game to play. Welcome, I hope the Alganon Boards don't miss you while you are here.
2. So they toned down some of the stuff they stole from WoW? Which bits? The UI, skill tree's, skills etc?
3. Graphically gorgeous? What the?!?
4. Online Community?? What the 20 people at most ever online?

Why is Massively continually the only online MMO Review place constantly digging up new gushing reviews of the most universally shit-canned MMO ever made? Every 2 or 3 months another article about this turd of a game along the lines of "yeah i heard it was bad but I gave it a go and its awesome!'.

I couldn't give a toss about Derek Smart, the game was a steaming pile before he got onboard and now that a half baked UI has replaced the badly copied WoW UI it still doesn't make this any less of a steaming pile of crap.

Sorry, but the whole 'paid for comment' is just glaring now. I await with baited breath your next glowing revue of Alganon in a few months - if its still going.
