We've been treated to a deluge of information about Final Fantasy XIV over the past couple of days, which coincides nicely with the fact that the collector's edition releases in just a little over a month. The obvious bonus to that special edition, of course, is the fact that it releases a week before the standard edition. But there's more inside the box than just an early game disc, and Eorzeapedia has had the chance to take a look closer at some of the contents.
The Square-Enix security token included in the box certainly goes a long way to alleviating the price of entry, as it normally costs $10 alone and will work with both Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI (indeed, having both on the same account can provide distinct advantages). Also worth noting are the special documents mailed to players for characters they create -- a physical commemoration of your character, with designs unique to each home nation. Combine that with the travel journal full of concept art, and there are plenty of bonuses even without the early release. (Not that said release isn't excellent.)

Now if only someone could contact Japan to release the beta keys they owe Zam, FFXIVCore, and Fileplanet, because I want to help this puppy out!

Indeed. According to FP's twitter, SE is still holding off until they fix some server issues. The keys may be released tonight, tomorrow, or over the weekend for all we know. I've been itching to have a stab at this game for quite a while, and at this rate it seems I won't get a chance until open beta.
Yet on the other hand, it's of little worth to have a beta key and be unable to log in. Here's hoping SE fixes whatever's borked soon.

So we are getting the collectors early or are we getting some email with info on how to play early?

If the typical Square Enix offered chicken feed of information revealed about this game in the last two days qualifies as a deluge, than the Guild Wars 2 information revealed must be a flood on the same level as the one Moses had to ride out.
Weather metaphors sure are subjective.

I think you mean Noah, Raze. Moses was the dude who rode the sands when the Red Sea was parted...
...but I get your point. :)

While you are correct in that I'd meant Noah, I'm going to try and save face by saying that Moses had to walk down the parted Red Sea, which, using some twisted logic, could be construed as a sort of suspended flood. It -does- to drown the Pharaoh's men. Do I win some brownie points for that, at least?

Unless the collector's edition will include user friendly controls and camera I'm not sure why anyone should care.
Yes I've been beating this horse since beta started, because it can not be emphasized enough.

That bad huh? Supposedly there's an open beta coming soon, I wonder if that will create mass preorder cancellation

I am looking forward to this game, but I just get this sinking feeling that it is getting rushed out the door to beat Cataclysm's release date.
Does anyone in the current beta feel that the game is going to be ready for launch in a month? I hear a lot of people in the beta still feel the UI/Controls need a lot of improvement. Poor controls are the main reason I couldn't really get into FF11, and it would be pretty ignorant of SE if they think they can steal WoW players (one of their stated goals) with bad controls.

The controls are worlds better than FFXI's. Still not quite as simple as WoW's or other MMO's, but not hard to adjust to.
The UI isn't terrible but it could probably use some work. The menus look a lot cleaner than the rest of the UI so I suspect the action bars, minimap, etc. will be getting some polish sometime in the next few weeks.

It's so great to see other honest opinions on this game. When I talk about the clunky UI system and slow combat most just write me off as a troll. Great to see more honesty....see Joker?

LOL! I almost choked on my breakfast laughing.
If you are even in Beta just plug in a PS3 / PS2 / 360 controller and it should make it easier for anyone that has played FFXI or a console game.

Joker is correct, a gamepad makes all the difference, i detest gamepads, and consoles, which is what this title was made for.
I liked the first taste of the FF series though after working with it for a couple three weeks it has soured my outlook somewhat, not because of what i expect but of what SE expects others to do and use.
As always its my choice to subscribe or not, right now, not.

The idea that I should buy a console controller to play a PC game just doesn't make much sense to me. Just strikes me as very lazy developers, who can't even customize PC controls for a PC game.

@Jade Effect. You don't "need" a console controller to play it, lol.
Some will like the PC controls and some will like the gamepad controls.
You have a choice.
