The first bit of interesting MMO news from Gamescom 2010 belongs to Microsoft, as the software giant has announced the latest entry in the venerable Age of Empires franchise. Age of Empires Online will offer players the chance to take their city-building adventures to the next level via a persistent online capital that grows even when its owner is offline.
The new title also features co-op multiplayer questing, trading, and a leveling mechanic in addition to story-based gameplay. Age of Empires Online will also feature free online gameplay via the Games for Windows platform, as well as a new graphical style that represents something of a stylistic departure from past titles in the series.

the sign up for the beta is an arduous process and I had a feeling this was coming since they shut down Ensemble

Robot Entertainment, the company formed by the founders of Ensemble, is making it.

So, its not actually about warfare? I love city building, i always think pushing war into that spoils things. So kinda sounds good, hope it has some depth in it, and i like the art style, everything looks silky smooth.

OMG ITS A FARMVILLE-KILLER! /sarcasm off
It could be cool and be a nice little gem/ninche game if they did it correctly, HOWEVER... this is Microsoft were talking about. Microsoft makes good OS's(excluding ME & vista) and consoles, but they dont make good games. They have a few nice/okay ones but really this isn't their forte.
Judging by their previous track record of unreleased MMOs and a large pile of "what could have been" I would rate the successful outcome of this endeavor about 1/10 chanch of happening.
It could work if pulled off right, but I am highly skeptical of Microsoft MMO design capabilities.

MicroSoft haven't a farkin clue about creating mass-gaming, they've cancelled just about every MMO-genre game they have ever been involved with.

You bastards! You really did it!
Gods, some days there are really firm reasons to hate Microsoft. First they shutter Ensemble, then they try this. It's a shame I can't rage in the general direction of Bill Gates for it anymore.
*Sigh* This is doomed to either failure, or absolutely infamous success. I'd truly prefer the first.

This looks million times better than atrociously horrible trainwreck known as Age of Empires III.
Oh and please farmville did invent persistent universes. Guess what? Most of mmorts genre games have persistent worlds(for example Dreamlords)

There was tremendous fun to be had in AOE 1 & 2, and I still get tempted to fire up a game every now and again. If Microsoft can bring the game back to its roots, I think they'll have a winner. Also, needs more WOLOLOOOOOO.

Looks like Lord of Ultima but better.
I'll be playing if it isn't subscription based and the cash stores has to have good stuff.
I like the lighter graphics.
I would still prefer an age of mythology mmo.
