The superhero MMO genre isn't as sparse as it used to be, but DCUO's Chris Cao isn't sweating the competition. In a recent interview with The MMO Gamer, DC Universe Online's creative director expresses supreme confidence that DCUO will be the one superhero title to rule them all. "It's just the ultimate superhero experience," he said. "You're not playing Batman this time. You are there with thousands of other players, working for and against him. That's never been done."
DCUO's simultaneous rollout to both the PC and PS3 was a significant part of the interview. Cao admits that he was attracted to the project specifically because it was going to be released for the console market as well, something he feels is largely unexplored territory.
Cao also discusses the relationship that his team built with DC proper during the game's development. Instead of being at odds with having thousands of player-run superheroes entering into the DC universe, DC worked hand-in-hand to both educate SOE's crew and help meld the comic book experience with the MMO. Cao shares one example of this: "In fact, just a couple weeks ago, Geoff Johns and I were talking, and we thought of a feature we wanted to put in, and he goes, 'No problem, we'll write it into the comic books. So now it's instant canon.' I don't think you can get much better than that."

I'll take 'Promising The Moon' for 1,000.

Same problem as any marvel franchise, you play in an stablished world. No matter what you do, the dammed trinity will always save the day... or any of their superfriends.
In those games you're always a secondary, not a true hero :(

Is that any different to Defender or Statesman in the established superhero games, though?

Didn't Chris Cao also promise the ultimate Star Wars Experience a week before SWG introduced the NGE?

We'll see. Lets see some gameplay videos first. I prefer that over hyped-up interviews about how different this game is from the rest crap.

Sure it is.
In CO tutorial you not only help him, but defeat the enemies when he goes down.
Defender is not Iron Man, he's an insecure person and you are the main character in all stories. You got your own nemesis, etc...
Even in CoX maybe some huge personalities, but Statesman will never cast the same shadow as Superman, so you can be the hero.
In long time franchises you are just the new guy, end even if the game lets you do some real good heroic actions everyone knows that status quo will remain the same. They are Batman and Green Lantern after all... they are pop culture icons, you can never even thought to be their equal.
Other games just avoid this kind of frustration. For example Star Wars got true 20th century icons, but the universe is so huge that you can be your own hero in your very own planet and be the one that marks the diference.

Well, not like there's much competition anyways.
Other games in the Super Hero genre?
CoH/V: About the only good one out there.
CO: Screwed the pooch. Seriously... thats what happened to the Taco Bell dog, and why we haven't seen him/her in a looooong while...
Super Hero Squad: Yaaaaaay... child mmo based off bad child series (where all shared the same body type, even female) most likely made to sell bad child toys from McDonalds...
Yeah... all ya got to beat is CoH, and if you have a non-instanced world full of "quest maps" that repeat the last 50 ones, then you have it beat.

I do believe that DCUO, if it does well, will kill Champions Online if CO doesn't really step things up. And I hope they do - having three very different games in the same genre competing against each other sounds like a whole lot of WIN to me! :)

Well It wont be hard to be the best in the superhero gene considering the compitition it has, but being a fun game over all is totaly different and I just don't see it hapening.

This game will not be the ultimate superhero experience because Sony's cash shop will ruin the fun unless you pull out your credit card.
Every single cool, awesome and wanted costume piece and other items will be cash shop only items
A game centered on character costume appearance and superpowered items is perfect for SOE to create a cash shop full of goodies that players will have to pay for.
This will be one of those games with a monthly subscription and a cash shop which is more the ultimate experience in getting ripped off.

Its a Sony game, of course its going to have a cash shop and subscription, just like Everquest 2. Very similar to what champions online does as well, even though you are paying a monthly fee you still dont get access to all the costume sets unless you pay extra.
