Not to be outdone by all the hemming and hawing over the perceived merits of its space combat implementation in The Old Republic, BioWare has released a short video clip showing brief bits of the gameplay in action. Underscored by John Williams' seminal TIE Fighter Attack music track from A New Hope, the video features some stunningly rendered spacecraft as they fly and fight their way through asteroid belts and in high planetary orbits.
The trailer also features the high-quality voice acting that everyone has come to expect from BioWare's Star Wars title, and you can check it out after the cut or at the official website.

You know, I was okay with the on rails space combat announcement.
Now, I'm REALLY okay with it. That looks like a lot of fun.

I am certain that Bioware will do a good job with whatever format for space combat is chosen, but the issue is the DESIRE for sandbox-exploration gameplay as well. These may be precieved as 'mini-games' dispite how much fun they may or may not be.
I hope to hear that a sandbox-exploration concept is in the works to compliment the depicted gameplay. Again, I am not saying that the current version will not be fun; I'm saying that many (myself included) would love to explore space...and maybe gank some Sith :)

I wasnt really excited about this game but that video made me remember how cool the old star wars was. Before the age of jar jar.

Looks fun. Hopefully they will eventually expand it to a more open version similar to the JTL expansion for SWG so we can have some cool pvp dogfights.

It looks nice, but the reactive voice library needs to be thoroughly extensive for it to work. If our character keeps repeating the same ten lines of dialogue in an asteroid littered dogfight, I think most of us will end up turning it off.

Considering the amount of dialogue they talked about having as far back as prior to E3, i'm sure they have dozens if not hundreds of different responses for this stuff, from probably a dozen or more different computers/pilots/co-pilots.
I wasn't really thrilled when i first heard about it being a rail shooter in space. This video does make it look a lot more fun though. Have to see what impact it really has in the game i guess, and what all you can and must do with it once you buy/earn your ship. I suppose in the end it may end up like crafting in most mmos, if you dont like it, you dont do it.

Looks... unimpressive, honestly. Shiny graphics, but still nothing more than a minigame. I really hope they flesh it out more.

I'm getting really excited about this game, can't wait for it. Too bad there's fire and sound on the outter space, though :P

Well there could be sonic pulses in space, and er....plasma fire....hey the sun is on fire right??
Bah stop looking behind the curtain! Just enjoy it! I mean seriously a laser sword somehow restricted to a certain length is silly too but i bet youve secretly swung something around your bedroom pretending it was a lightsaber!

Star Wars has never been cold, realistic science fiction. As there is sound in the space scenes in the Star Wars movies, taking that sound out for a video game would be a very poor decision on countless levels. If you want a realistic space simulator, you'll probably want to play the MMO that Nasa is developing. Just food for thought.

Okay, as much as I in the camp of "shut up and enjoy it because it's awesome", my inner nerd is compelled to correct danarchy. Sonic pulses couldn't exist in a vaccum because any sound is the result of molecules hitting each other and there aren't enough molecules close enough to each other in empty space for sound to travel.
All that said, I tend to ingore such things as it would make most any sci-fi series set in space very. very. VERY boring.
And to make this a bit more on-topic: I was slightly nervous when they said space combat would be on-rails (though who doesn't have fond memories of StarFox?), but after seeing this, I'm excited!
And I feel the urge to bust out Rogue Squadron again...

Wasn't a sonic bomb used in space in one of the prequels? I think he was referring to that. ;-)

The sound you're hearing is what happens when the stray particles from the weapon fire hits the microphone on the camera.
Or it's the sound of the weapon's fire from within the cockpit of the firing craft.
Sounds in space are fine for me in Star Wars because they never make a big deal about it.
Then there's the scene in the Wing Commander movie where they rig their ship to "run silent" and everyone has to stop talking and moving around like on a submarine. Ugh.

Can't say I'm looking forward to space flight simulation, since it's not something I want to play in a MMO. I just hope it isn't something that the game requires the player to do a lot, like mandatory flying missions to get past certain points in the game, or taking down thousands of enemy ships so you can earn enough faction points to buy that cool loot/ship/whatever.
