Square-Enix has been as good as their word when it comes to obfuscating the details of Final Fantasy XIV, even through testing. Testers have been confined to the port city of Limsa Lominsa all through the beta phases, but last week Square gave a small hands-on to a handful of sites showing off the other two cities. FFXIVCore happened to be among them, and offers an extensive rundown of the experience in both Ul'dah and Gridania -- both of which are very different from the thoroughly-tested pirate-themed opening.
Gridania's opening takes place within the dense forests surrounding the city, with a crashed airship and a rather unexpected encounter with wolves. Ul'dah, on the other hand, features a great deal of pageantry being disrupted by the untimely freedom of a goobue. Both include certain common elements from the Limsa Lominsa opening, most notably the meteor shower and the disembodied voice, but the rundown indicates that players starting in different settings will have a memorable start to their adventures as well. That's good news for Final Fantasy XIV's future players, although perhaps a bitter pill for the testers not yet able to play these cities.

I'm so tired of LL* I could scream. I really hope they unlock the other areas soon so I can have a change of scenery.

Sadly, I doubt they ever unlock any of the other areas. But I know one thing, I hate LL.....it looks neat, but dang, I hate getting from A to B in that place.

Been in the beta for about a week, had high hopes, but the combat is just soooo bad. The main storyline really is good but that combat is wonky....don't think I can get past that.

I was afraid it would be =(
Everything about this game looked so awesome except the stiff and slow paced combat and the user interface. Also, I was wondering how "grindy"/boring tradeskills and leveling would be. FF XI was my first MMO, but once WoW and GW released, I never looked back. Okay, maybe I looked back a little =) I was really hoping FF XIV would be the game I wished XI was...
Sigh. I guess I'll just have to wait for Guild Wars 2 or SWTOR.

It's rather subjective. I'm fairly pleased with the combat - it's a tad on the stiff side occasionally, but that seems to more often be a symptom of network instabilities.
I'd not yet make a final judgment on the game, but thus far it does seem to be the game I was hoping for.

Here you are trolling FFXIV comments, again.
You say the same crap over and over.
You just tricked Aru into not buying the game and you even Trolled the writer this time.
You really deserve a ban.
BTW you said you were in the Alpha and Beta a few months ago.

The sad thing is... he'll probably end up playing FFXIV and continue his trolling in the actual game.
He's probably trying to scare all the people away from the game by using reverse psychology... or he could just be a jackass ;)
I personally hope that this is not going to be a WoW clone, like a lot of the other MMO's that come out these days.
I expect a difficult game, great endgame, good story, smart combat (not just faceroll 1-2-3-4-5 your rotation during a boss fight). If that means that it won't have 10million subscribers, or that I can't solo a mob at the same level in less than 2 seconds, or that I can't get to max level without understanding the purpose of my job/class, that's a small price to pay :)

I've been watching a lot of Youtube videos of people in Beta and keeping up to date with information and it's definitely not another WoW clone.

Here's a link to a Youtube vid of a big group of people fighting strong monsters if you're curious abut the combat.
This guys other vids will show you in more detail how the combat works.

Heck no. I love having stuff I haven't seen waiting for me on release. If they put the cities in the beta I'll feel guilty for not rushing to test them like a good little beta monkey. ;-) As it is now I can just pick a different starting city when the game comes out and poof, stuff I haven't done before!

Anyone who complains about slow combat has only watched alpha or early beta videos and judged it on that. It's so much better now it's not even funny. TP moves really mean something in beta 3 and I'm finding that I'm actually using all of my abilities regularily (except haymaker because Jarring strike is the same thing but with a stun) and I never run out of stamina and spend time waiting for it to regenerate. They also spruced up the battle animations and stamina gauge and made weapon skills a lot more flashy.
IMO this game has a ton of potential and I can see myself playing it for years. I just hope they fix the server stability issues and input lag which I have no doubt they'll do considering how massive of a leap it's taken in performance in those areas throughout the beta. If people think SE's handling of this beta is "bad" I'd recommend you check out how they handled FFXI

Here's hoping for another experience like FFXI.

What are you talking about man? I never said I was in alpha lol. Seriously just simmer down there little fanboy. I'm just describing my feelings of the combat atm. Destructoid & 1Up have published reviews of the beta saying similar things about the combat AND they add in how bad the UI is. Are they trolls to? For some reason you think I want this game to fail but I don't, however, lying to people about the UI and the combat is something I just want do.

The combat is not what I would call clunky at the moment. I would say it is not as polished as the combat in a game like WoW. Honestly, without an autoattack system and the current interface lag issues its hard to compare with other games. The interface lag that is there in just about every aspect of the beta just serves to make combat not always flow very well. Right now XI's combat beats out XIVs.
The UI is clunky, and some of the issues it has are not effected by the interface lag. That being said, the game has come a LONG way since Alpha. Heck, there were significant improvements between Beta1 and Beta 2 and 3. Its unfair to really give a review of any system or even the game world when we are in an extremely confined test bed situation. There is an internal build where everything is where it should be, and the beta build where mobs are mostly just there for us to kill and the area is extremely narrowed.
For this reason getting out of LL and into another area will be a godsend. We need an announcement of when and how long Open Beta will start and last. With the game being released in 4 weeks, we need some movement.
