In SWTOR's Deceived trailer, there was an odd shot of the Jedi leader giving a signal to an astromech droid. Per usual, the writers at BioWare do not put anything into their trailers without a specific reason. This past Friday, that little droid was revealed to be a companion for the Jedi knight class, named T7-O1 (tee seven - oh one). This little bot calls back to both T3-M4 of Knights of the Old Republic and, of course, R2-D2 of the Star Wars movies. In fact, his attitude is very similar to R2-D2's. According to the companion page on SWTOR's official site, he considers his owners to be more like partners and less like masters.
T7-O1 was activated over two centuries before the Treaty of Coruscant and has yet to be memory-wiped in that whole time. He remembers every organic he has ever worked with, from the petty smugglers, to Senator Oodora of Manaan, to Captain Nico Okarr, and to Jedi Master Ven Zallow, whom we witnessed being killed by Darth Malgus in the previously mentioned trailer. For your Jedi knight character, you can expect this droid to be an invaluable source of information. His surveillance, cartography, and data-slicing skills are unmatched.
BioWare has not revealed where your Jedi knight will meet T7-O1, just like every other companion mentioned for this game, but rest assured, he's waiting for you somewhere in that galaxy far, far away.

Oh boy another thing literally everyone else will have the same of. Thanks for doing all that hard Roleplaying for us, Bioware, lord forbid we get the chance to do anything unique.

I agree, why can't we choose what our companion is despite what our class is? Why if I'm a jedi, do I have to have this droid? Why can't we just have what ever companion that fits our fancy? Give us a list of companions that we can choose from?

@Nick I agree. At a guess companions tie in heavily to the class storyline quests, hence their stock nature. Pity

Why are people still surprised about things like this? This game will not be a total revolution in terms of player freedom or customizability. It will be a Bioware game set within a MMO framework. This means a focused story with companion characters that are deeply intertwined with said story. Personally I am fine with this, but I suppose I can see why some people would not be.
I have to say though, we've known that companion characters will differ based on your class for a while now. At some point people are going to have to let go of their notions of what they think this game SHOULD BE and come to terms with what it really IS. I don't think I've read a single news article about this game where he comments weren't full of people saying they are disappointed because reality doesn't match up with the picture they've built up in their heads.

Yeah what's up with games choosing companions for us? Why are all my companions in KotOR and Mass Effect the same as everyone else's?! Where's the RPG where I can choose from hundreds of potential companions and never have the same ones as everyone else? The way TOR is being made, you'd think it was being made by a company who's made single-player RPGs before who are trying to emulate that style to hook fans of single-player RPGs. Crazy I know.

Is the implication that all jedi characters will have this same droid as their pet/partner? Won't that look really weird?

Why would it look weird? When was the last time you played a MMO and didn't see everyone identical? It's bizarre demanding customizability when everyone inevitably becomes cookie cutter identical. There is always that best gear set that makes it happen. Bitching about it here is retarded.

@Laffe, I'm disappointed because Bioware has said that this MMO will be unlike any other, but the more info I see about it the less I feel that way. I want it to be unique and new, otherwise why should I transfer from the MMO's I'm currently playing? The in game cut scenes are exciting but this is a missed opportunity for Bioware. If I recall correctly (which I do) in WoW, a hunter can have almost any animal as a pet, sure the different types all act the same, but they look different. WoW is not the first MMO, nor is it the most revolutionary, but its also 6 years old and has mechanics in it that this new game can't seem to implement, not because it can't but because they choose not to.

It would look weird because this is not a generic creature we're talking about, it's a very specific, unique character. It's a single player RPG character in a multiplayer environment. THAT's why it'll look weird and why so many people are scratching their heads now, Targetboy.

@Nick
Everything depends on what parts you focus on. Bioware have from day one said that they are taking the three pillars that MMOs usually are built upon (Exploration, Combat, Progression) and are adding a fourth (Story). Does this mean the game will be "unlike any other"? Well, yes and no. It will be unlike other games by virtue of being the first fully voiced MMO, but it is still built very much around the framework of other traditional MMORPGS. Perspective. It matters.
Also, comparing WoWs pets with SWTORs companions is like comparing apples and oranges. In WoW, the pets are a combat mechanic with no impact whatsever on the games world and story. In SWTOR, companions are integral part of your characters story and have distinct personalities. If the price for this is that I can only get the characters flagged for my class to join me, I think I could live with that. I'll reserve my final judgement for when I actually get to play the game though, as it should be. I just find it helps to focus on what they actually say when they announce something rather then thinking about the what the implications of the news can be. Speculation can be fun, but it shouldn't dictate your expectations of a game in development.
And as usual what I thought was going to be a short answer turned out to be a long comment. In before TL;DR.

And yet, Neurotic one, I doubt you even once question why everyone has the same named sword from the same named mob from the same dungeon. Why not start a campaign to dump specialized equipment?

If they put droids like this as companions in the game, how are we supposed to understand them if we don't speak droid?? Everyone in the movies seemed to, but I sure don't! haha

I'm just sick of games that RP for me, I get you need some kinda metaplot and all, that's cool, but dang I'm gonna be annoyed having to see literally every other jedi just happening to have my exact same droid next to them. I never thought it'd be any worse then AoC's 'YOU ARE ALL DESTINED, EVERY ONE OF YOU, TO BE OUR SAVIOR' crap but good old Bioware managed to find a way to do it again.

Do you also get stunned when you see another player with the same Sword of the Awesome as you?
Oh wait, there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of other players with the same sword.
