Closed beta keys for Final Fantasy XIV are a pretty hot commodity these days, and FilePlanet has managed to get it's virtual hands on some.
The site is being very clear that this is a limited number of keys, and the FilePlanet powers-that-be are acting accordingly. You'll need to be a FilePlanet or Founders' Club subscriber in North America, you'll need to watch closely, and you'll need to be fast. They'll release one batch of keys every day until August 16th, and once they're all claimed for the day, that's it.
To try your hand, stake out FilePlanet's beta key giveaway page, and good luck!

You'll need a horse shoe up your butt to get one. Todays beta invites only lasted 3minutes.

3 Minutes? Try under under a minute.
Let's see...
1.) Change wordage on site from all subscribers to limited. Check
2.) Remove the one month option for FilePlanet subscribers. Check
3.) Less than 100 keys available per day. Check
4.) Release the few keys available at the same time they were released Thursday. Check
5.) Waste ten keys for some horrible twitter contest. Check
I can see why FilePlanet has a D rating on the better business bureau.
Doesn't get much worse than that.

Why even post this, you barely have a chance in hell of ever getting one of these keys, and have to pay to even get the chance. The second the 2 minute warning was posted I raced and refreshed and even made it to the form page to enter my info, by the time I typed in my name and DOB and pressed submit, they were out of keys! I should have known better then to spend money to beta this game, but I really want to know whether it will be worth the CE or not. Now, I'll probably never not know till open beta, and be out my $7 dollars on a worthless website.

I'm in the same boat. I paid for a month of FilePlanet just for an FFXIV key. But I had no idea they would go so fast after hearing it took them 3 hours on the first day to give out the daily limit. I'm sure a lot of people will be emailing support demanding refunds over this though.

It's a very expensive lotto ticket, and you need to be extremely quick in entering your info at exactly the right time. I was debating whether or not to try, but after reading about how quickly they ran out today (quite literally within minutes), decided against it.
Looking on the bright side, this just shows that there is a lot of demand and interest in the game, which is always a good thing. :)
And for those who paid and didn't get in, don't lose hope: you still have tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday to try again.

FilePlanet sure is making a killing getting people to sign up for the chance of getting a beta key.

You might try setting your phone up to receive texts from twitter. I Followed fileplanet, and set up texts today. I got a text, stopped what I was doing, and logged on. I was probably very lucky, but I got a key. I was surprised as well to see them gone after 2 minutes!

...Why can't people just wait until the game's out?

Because I don't like to pay $50 to $75 dollars on a game when a free demo or beta test will easily help me decide if I am willing to invest money into a game. SE has been so secretive on the content as well as crafting, I want to be able to test the game and see if it will be worth my time...or will even play on my system due to high system requirements.
Also, with MMO's I don't like to be behind the curve, I want to level up from day 1 with my friends, and not feel left behind because I waited a month or 2 for a buddy pass or trial.

You (Dan) do realize that beta-testing isn't merely for your (Dan's) benefit, don't you? Its purpose is to polish the product for everyone to enjoy, particularly the developers, by having a product that'll not only be received well, but sell. Sorry if I don't sympathize with your plight then.
And you don't like to pay for a game from the get-go and yet you don't like to be left in the dust by friends who do? Sorry if I don't understand how you're gonna resolve that conflict.

@OldBoy
The game is releasing in weeks and at this stage there is little a beta can contribute to, it was never a bug hunting beta in the first place (explicitly said in the emali i got from SE upon my invitation) but a feedback beta, and they got all the feedback they needed MONTHS ago. The only thing that's left to do is stress the servers, and if the stress test helps someone see whether they like the game, so what. It wouldn't need to be that way if a trial/demo at launch was a standard practice.

I don't see why this is news now. I checked 8 hours ago and they were out. Yeah you can keep trying but they go so fast, it's almost not worth it.

Dont even bother, I got a beta key and was sorely disappointed with this game.
The ui is horrible, quest directives are horrible, the configuration menu is horrible, graphics are nice. It runs in a window with no way to put it full screen. The map system is horrible, cant scroll it.
And I died in one hit to a dodo, no indication that this was an elite mob or anything.

Before the FFXI Defense Force arrives with standard issue pitchforks and torches, I would like to know more why you felt the quest directives and UI are horrible. Does the game not tell you where you are supposed to go and what you are supposed to do once you are there? Can you relate any specific examples why you felt the configuration and user interface is lacking?

FFXIV configuration is a separate utility. Go to your installation folder and open FFXIVconfig.exe select "english" as your language from the little bar, then click on "general". Select the Video Settings tab, display mode, change to full screen.

Dodos have a red icon next to their name.... They are one of the toughest mobs you'll see out of the gate..>.> Open your eyes?
The game runs in full screen for me and not in windowed mode, you can't alt tab yet though or the game crashes. The UI right now is bugged with gamepad control (maybe because they added better mouse support, add something break something else ;) ) and there needs to be serious tweaks done before it's good, like the loot system needs to be fixed so it's more accessible.
