An open forum for discussing class balance is pointless except for giving unhappy customers a place to vent. These guys did not want to be there -- and it showed.

I'd beg to differ on that one, DeathMutant. Especially with the inattentive EQ2 developers, sometimes issues brought up in Fanfaire are the only way they seem to really grasp the fact that something is a major problem.

My favorite was their lack of awareness of server lag. For 6 months.

Watching these videos of the panels, it actually scares me at how much they don't know about the mechanics of their own game... They seemed completely surprised by certain questions and didn't understand how certain things worked.

EQ2's silly class system was always going to bite them in the backside - enough of us told them that in beta. They thought 4 archetypes with 3/6 samey classes/sub-classes in each would make balancing easier. Yeah right.

Didn't take them long to abandon the sub-classing decisions and try to just treat all 24 (far too many!) classes as different entities in their own right, but that flawed foundation would always overshadow the design of the classes. Now they have more than twice as many classes as most other fantasy MMOs, which increases the balance issues exponentially. I'm not a big fan of WoW, but at least their classes are very different to each other and in many cases have their own gameplay mechanics.

I'd rather have less than 10 interesting classes with slight overlap in role, than 20+ similar classes with major overlaps, because class balance is an unattainable dream whatever the game design (unless you only have one class with no skill/talent customisation, of course :p ).
