So basically it's:

How many different ways we can re-use models!

Incorrect.
It's a means to dynamically create new models automatically from a single source.
This means that it will be much easier to create a plethora of items by creating a single base object, as opposed to making separate objects individually. So now they can focus on making unique clothing options and having them work dynamically with the models, instead of being bound by the base models available and offering mere color swaps.

If they've got all this fascinating technology, why are there only five very generic PC races?

(Note: As for color swap, Glares at Blizz again.)

@ raze

the races aren't generic, they are keeping in line of the world. 14 takes place in the future world and lands of 11. Hence the same races, yet each races has a few nationalities which changes their color and in some minor alterations to the race

Raze, you answer has already been stated numerous times. They've given an answer as to why. If you don't like the answer fine, but theres no reason to bring up a moot point again. If they feel enough demand for another race then they will add one. Do you really think SquareEnix didn't know how to how to make a new race? I don't know why you think they are Generic either..Perhaps they are similar to XI. You you use the term generic as if its a negative term when it isn't.

This is what separates FFXI and FFXIV from other MMOs-- it's the artwork and the details that go into each one of them.

WoW doesn't compare, neither does Vindictus, nor Tera for that matter. Even AION and their plastic-looking Barbie dolls can't come close.

The people behind FFXI and FFXIV are rather talented artistically, and it's nice to see unique armors and weapons and equipment. I like where they're taking this.

"Of course, the one thing that can't be shared from the beta is video..."

Youtube and a gajillion different beta FRAPS clips would beg to differ. :P

I was really kind of disappointed in character creation after coming from Aion. Not that it's bad compared to all the other MMOs on the market right now, but Aion's is still better. Most of the available adjustments aside from hair are small things that most people won't notice unless they really take the time to look at your character. Body sizes and shapes are set to a predefined, very similar, set of four per subrace/sex.

(...not that Aion has a game behind it worth snot anymore. But XIV has yet to prove this point too.)

In the beta we are speculating there may be more options then there is currently to come. There will NEVER be the same freedom given as in Aion because SE is too aesthetically driven (no freak shows allowed), but someone from alpha pointed out there were many more color options in the beta stage that was taken out and the new Miqo'te tail options have nasty primary colors to pick from, I doubt that's the release version.. ;P
I guess in Phase 3 there was some hairstyle variances added too, like different bangs and barrettes. Hopefully there's a bit more to come. ^_^

I don't want any freakshows either. I'm just disappointed I can't create a hume/mithra female that isn't anorexic, or a Taru that's more brawny and less potbelly.

Don't know if anyone cares, but Fileplanet has Beta keys ( for subs ). They are releasing batches, some already went out yesterday. A new batch due out soon.

It should also be noted that you need to be a subscriber @ FP to get a key (i.e., pay $$). Worth a shot if you're already a subscriber, not so much if not.

Looking forward to trying out the Character Creation first hand - got my hands on an FP code yesterday (update is going slooow on the client).

One thing that already niggles me is the crazy way the forum system is set up - you start out w/ random display names, then once you figure out how to change it [if it wants to work] you have to figure out why you can't post in any forums [at least me]. Probably something to do with it being an FP beta key I used.

Anyway - probably be able to jump in tonight/tomorrow/next week [whenever the dang client finishes updating].

Looked great to me, interesting as well. Still not sure about the actual game itself since I never played FF Online before and not really sure what to expect. I just HOPE that these guildleave quests that have you going around killing ten rats is just one way to go about leveling. I really just want the story and HATE grinding rats lol.

The FF 11 was very party oriented if you wanted to do majority of the fun stuff. Hopefully this time around you can enjoy doing both.

If it turns out the way I think it will. You'll likely have an XP grind on mobs much akin to FFXI. Like it or not every game has a grind... Be it an XP grind, Rep, or Quests. They are there no matter what. If you are planning on doing Leve's only you'll be sadly mistaken at least in it's current state. You can only do 8 Leve's every 2 RL days. Not sure if the local Leve's are on a different timer or not, I havent had a chance to do any since Beta 3 started. The game is awsome, it's a lot like FFXI. Which makes me really happy. That game had one of the most robust crafting systems I've ever seen. A pain in the butt at times but awsome at the same time.
