If you're getting a strong sense of deja vu at the title up above, we can't blame you -- after all, we've been covering this supposed MMO announcement for a couple years now. However, a pair of recent developments have led us to believe that Atari is on the verge of announcing the long-anticipated Neverwinter Nights MMO.
The first piece of concrete news is a brief statement from the recent GenCon Indy, where Critical-Hits.com went to a D&D products seminar and heard the representatives state that Atari has an upcoming D&D video game. Unfortunately, they were unable to obtain any further information about it at the convention.
Following up on this statement, Superannuation did a bit of digging and discovered that Atari recently purchased a slew of domain names, including visitneverwinter.com, playneverwinter.com and neverwintergame.com. Add these facts together with the promised announcement of Cryptic's new MMO this summer, and we could be hearing official confirmation of a Neverwinter Nights MMO any day now. Stay tuned!

Cryptic has definitely been putting out second-rate titles lately, but then that's what Atari has been publishing too, so they're made for each other. Too bad they have to drag the Neverwinter franchise into it. Bioware is too cool for school now, and Obsidian doesn't have MMO chops, so there's not really anyone obvious to step up.

"Ahh. Cryptic, building games just good enough to sell boxes but lack depth or excitement for any length of time.
Your insult still gives them far to much credit.
It'll be funny to see them try to sell Lifetime subs with "exclusive bonuses" for their next game, they already screwed over their most loyal of fanboys when they put those items up for sale.
What a waste of another IP that could have been great in the hands of a competent developer. Instead we'll get the next Craptic 18 month rush to launch mess. Sorry Craptic, not this time.

Cryptic is just garbage. They can't design their way out of a box without making another box.
Cryptic developing NWN = GG, I'm out.

No doubt. Cryptic is not up to the challenge of STO and to further over burden it with another iconic franchise seems like a monumental bitch' slap in the face of gamers.
Additionally, the engine Cryptic uses is so dated and simply fucked on so many levels I cant imagine a NWN MMO based on it. Hell I cant imagine STO on it to be honest.
For the love all things please dont be Cryptic....

If they allow player made content like CoH or a modified version of NWN1 toolset, then this has some potential. At any rate, there's a lot of frustration against Cryptic from CO and STO so they really will have to make a stellar game to regain some of the trust they lost with many gamers.

Agreed. With Guild Wars 2 on the horizon, there's very little chance of Cryptic getting any more of my faith or money with any game using their shallow Cryptic Engine as a base. I've learned my lessons with CO and yes, STO.
I'll admit that they have the customization part down...they do fantastic with that. However, even assuming they have the most talented writers and designers in the world, the Engine itself limits the amount of interactivity and creativity that can be brought to bear. I don't see it having the environmental interactivity of DDO, and again you'll be visiting a theme park, set in the NWN universe along with static quest-dispensing NPCs. Considering that the original NWN is one of the deepest character creation systems I've ever played in an RPG -- one that no online or offline game has managed to surpass (rightly so, considering the source material) -- that's a dilution I doubt I could stand.
Although I will give them props on developing the new minigames for STO, that was a welcome addition and does provide a glimmer of hope.

The NWN1 toolset belongs to Bioware so the chances of it getting utilized in anyway for a NWN MMO is Zero. Expect any NWN Online Game that comes out and isn't made by Bioware and published by Atari to suck ballz. Especially if its Cryptic because they suck hardcore...they release quickly and publish such a small amount of content. If theere's anything D&D MMO games have learned is you can't release with a small amount of content and a ton of Instancing. Just look at Atari's other D&D MMO by Turbine...it was good fortune and the constant production of new content and changes that kept it hanging on until they came up with a hybrid model that has repopulated various levels of the game.

eventually the shrinking box sales will give them a clue, unfortunately by then they'll have ruined so many possibly gold mine's (franchises) Not a damned one of them will be employable anywhere else but Cryptic.
As much as i'de love to see a NWN MMO (or hell forgotten realms plz...anyone??)
I flat out refuse to purchase another Cryptic title. At this point I'm leaning away from anything published by Atari, as they seem fine with rushing development cycles to push crap out the door regardless of quality.
CO had great potential. however the myriad of (STILL) un fixed bugs, balance, peformance issues coupled with boring repetative, mindlessly easy gameplay killed all of its potential once you've played it for a week.
Though guessing by thier current business model is fine as long as you make a c-store purchase or two before your 1st paid month is up.

Cryptic... Please let this be something other than a character creator with a game stuck on the end.
