I bought EQ from a Steam discount. I couldn't play it because of the crapy ui.
I mean UO is older than EQ, right? And they keep on developing new clients.

Its worth noting the EQ UI is 100% customisable, while the amount of sites supplying pre-made UI's has dropped drastically you can still find some real gems.

Player housing might be the final push I need to re-enter Norrath once again.

Eh, the UI does take some getting used to, but as Catastropohe says you're far from stuck with the default one. And player housing? Yes please Antonia!

Well, this is cool. Having never played EQ, the first thing I thought when I read the headline was "Holy crap, their level cap must be, what, about 150 by now?" It's nice to see the old school games doing it right and showing us that every x-pac doesn't necessarily need to add 10 levels.

You may be able to get third party UI help, but you are still limited to 8 spell slots, ugh. You still have god awful long meditation if you are running around without KEI. The quest system is still clunky as heck and it remains a raid or die game. It's only redeeming qualities in my book are the excellent classes and the wide variety of useful and "for fun" skills and spells.

Just modernizing the interface and removing spell / skill slot limitation would go a long, long way into revitalizing this game. I tried going back about a year ago and having to constantly rememorize spells for attacks, buffs, heals, teleports and other utilities and crowd control was what had me re-cancelling in less than a week. It also didn't help that soloing was still pretty much relegated to classes like the druid and necromancer, unless you could twink like hell. Downtime compared to today's games was almost unbearable unless, once again, you could twink with tons and tons of potions. Even before I returned to the game, I had never gotten a character above the early 30's thanks to the lovely grind and the aforementioned downtime.

All in all, my last return was a nastalgic trip back into the glory days that had me wondering why I ever played this game, let alone playing it for several years. At least housing would have given me something more to do than camp orcs up on orc hill.

I like the spell slot limitations myself; adds a strategic layer to what you're memorising. Mercenaries have pretty much killed the un-soloness of most classes too. :D

Completely agree. I was a hardcore raider in the original EQ and after redownloading it for nostalgic reasons a few months back, I was baffled by the insane clunkiness.

And sure, you can tell yourself that the spell slot restrictions are "strategic," but the fact of the matter is that most people don't have the patience for that type of arbitrary restriction anymore, including me. If the game needs restrictions like that, the devs are doing something wrong.

I've spoken many times on this site about my long-time love for EQ -- so I won't again. I did return to sub for a few months in the spring/early summer this year, but work got so busy for me that I had to take a step back. It's also a little frustrating that my once level-maxed druid has fallen far behind -- and now much further with the new cap. So this expansion probably won't impact me that much in terms of level 85-90 content, which means I'm happy it's bringing features for other players, like me, who's not maxed and still likes to sub to the game every once in a while. I played the game for the better part of 5 years, so I don't think I'll ever sub for years at a time again, but man is it a fun time to come back for a month or two here and there. Norrath will always be my virtual home -- and now I'll get to have a house in it, to boot. LOL.

Consider also that EQ is not only still making money but at this point developing expansion content for it is cheaper than the developing a mere content patch for a modern MMO.

EQINTERFACE is the best site for uptodate UIs for EQ and other games. YOu have to make sure the UI's are updated for the current expansion so the XML files will work properly. After each expansion you have to get the update or just redownload a UI you like that has a date on or after the expanion release. It has many full UI's adn parts/peices to mix adn match.
