I don't know which is stranger: the people who are very disappointed that space combat won't be all they thought it could be cracked up to be, or all these other people laughing and them and telling them to have no expectations for the game beyond voice acting and Mass Effect dialogue boxes.

just to give it a little perspective for everyone, the original space combat discussion on the official forums pre-announcement had a poll. the topic is so hot it had to be restarted two times because the threads were full.

thread 1 and thread 3 both had polls, they were not great polls due to too many voting options. BUT railshooter was the lowest voted category in both polls. under 1% in the first poll, and barely over 1% in the second poll. THE LOWEST voted category. lowest.

this is why its an epic fail. because a rail shooter is exactly what players who are interested in space DO NOT WANT. and they even told bioware that ahead of time and bioware didn't bother to listen.

I dont know guys the game is Star Wars, star wars without a good space element is like any other action movie / game , imagine the first 3 movies without any space battles. It wouldnt be Star wars.

In addition imagine this, you play the game and get a quest to go kill a sith admiral. You read the mission and you learn that the admiral is inside one of the star destroyers patroling another sector.

You gather your friends, get on your fighters and travel to the sector, there you find the star destroyer, but in order to enter it you have to disable it , imagine fighting the fighters, real space combat x-wing vs tie fighter or I-War (Independence War), cripling the star destroyer and then landing on it. After that fighting throught the decks to get to the admiral and killing him.

I dont think there would be anyone who wouldnt love it.

Well then.. one less game to buy.

It isn't that space combat being in or out is a deal breaker for me. It's that half-assed space combat in a game based on a franchise in which 75% of its story involves space combat says to me that it won't be the only half-assed component.

They honestly should have gone for JTL quality at the very least. Xwing Vs Tie Fighter with new polish and graphics and I'll pay for 5 years in advance.

Were people really hoping it'll become a space flight simulator? That would be the biggest turn off for me. I have no wish to play some dog-fight flight simulator.

There will be those players who enjoy the space combat and adventure portion of the Star Wars franchise, and there will other players who prefer mundane, planet-bound adventures of Star Wars, and finally there's the player base who prefer to bounce between the planetary missions and the call of space...and that's me in a nutshell, hopping between the planet-side and starscapes. I hope they expand the space portion of Star Wars, if it's truly space-on-rails.

SWTOR is becoming one of those MMORPGs where the more they reveal, the less interested I become. There is enormous potential for Bioware to do a Star Wars MMO well, but I'm becoming less convinced they can make the transition from single player RPG to MMORPG.

Sean Dahlburg from Bioware recently posted a clarification on this issue.

"UPDATE [1]: To clarify, Space Combat is not a Turret Shooter (this is probably obvious after seeing the screenshot but some people were mentioning it in the other thread)."

The screenshot looks interesting. It might be a Rogue Squadron type of controls.

It has since been confirmed to be like Rogue Squadron (from scans of the PC gamer article), in which you can move your ship around along the X & Y axis, but you cannot control the movement speed or general direction of the ship.

I would have preferred more freedom coupled with another solution to keep players inside the battlefield (I did not expect a JTL-like space sim), but at least it's better than what the German article suggested.

I hope this part of the game will be able to grow as time goes on.

Too many people focusing on the feature and not what this move represents. The reasoning for implementing it like this is to "keep the game accessible". IE: Prepare for the next game to beat out WoW for "most simplified and casual game ever". Hope everyone else enjoys their watered down MMO riding high on overwrought Star Wars cliches because I sure as hell won't be if that's their intention...

EPIC FAIL Bioware...
SWG space combat is the way it should be done. Anything else will feel like a joke.

Flight should be unrestricted. Players should be able to fly in the direction they choose, not forced into some dumbed-down self-guided kiddie train.

I'm glad they aren't going with a FPS style space combat simulator. I want a more tailored, MMO style experience, that once again places the focus on the character I'm role playing and not on my reflexes / latency. Thank you Bioware for sticking with what you know best and the reason why I love your games.
