I've never upgraded a computer. I buy a new one every four years or so. The closest I've come to upgrading was replacing a failing power supply.

My latest machine, bought in the late summer of 2008, is still close to top of the line because I tried to future-proof it. I included a quad-core CPU, a second terabyte HD that still has a large amount of space, and 8GB of RAM. But I only got a "decent" video card (512 MB Radeon HD 4870), because those change architecture so frequently.

As it turns out, that was wise. Later this year I'll start thinking about replacing that with something that can run DX11.

I usually upgrade for gaming, but ill only upgrade the ram or the video card. If my processor is too slow that means its time for a new comp. Although i am rethinking that now because i have a dual core athalon processor and an AM2+ mobo, there's like a legion of better processors out there that will greatly speed up my gaming without spending $800 bucks
