So you were playing Star Trek Online, but for whatever reason you stopped for a while. And all of the additions in Season 2 are certainly tempting, but you're not sure if you quite want to subscribe for another month to see if they're everything you ever wanted. If only there were some way to get a short jaunt back so you could decide one way or the other? If that describes you fairly well, you're in luck, as Cryptic has just announced that this weekend will be welcoming all lapsed players with open arms.
From now until Monday, August 9th at 10 a.m. PDT, anyone with a valid Star Trek Online account will be able to log in and play with no restrictions, giving players a chance at all the updates and expansions from the latest large patch. That includes new Klingon content, minigames, an expanded level cap, and the Federation Diplomatic Corps. It's enough to lure anyone back for the weekend, so take a look at the full terms and conditions, then head off to start boldly going where some players may or may not have previously gone.

It's kinda sad that they are desperately trying to get old players to come back when the game is only a few months old. I don't understand how Cryptic keeps being able to make huge MMOs.

Yes, really sad that they would try to improve and fix on what isn't working. I suppose they should just quit now.

Well STO certainly is not a huge mmo. I mean it's definitely not supposed to be triple A, they didn't build it with scope. Only thing they (criptic) had going for them was that a publisher like Atari was willing to buy Star Trek rights and let them make the game. But didn't give the kind of money needed to make the game trekkies and actually the rest of the world expected.
When I first started reading about the ST mmo Perpetual was making and seeing those screenshots (especially the one with the Akira class :) ) I was pretty excited. But years later, criptic made the game and here we are. They sold the boxes, they're getting what ever they can from the subs and when it'll eventually be over they'll move to whatever new project criptic might have. I was expecting a game mechanic like Bridge commander for space combat and Elite force 2 for ground missions all this in a much larger world than the SP games. And it would have been ok. But the situation STO is in comes from the way it was originally designed and thought out - limited in scope and vision - exactly the opposite of what the Star Trek movies and shows impressed on me (and I assume others). And this overarching background problem will never be solved no matter how many updates they produce.
