If you're looking for a space-based MMO with lots of pew pew and seat-of-the-pants piloting, Black Prophecy is probably already on your radar screen. If you're looking for a space-based MMO that has a bit of crafting complexity, take a second look at the upcoming free-to-play MMO from Reakktor and Gamigo.
In addition to modular ship-building, Black Prophecy also features a traditional crafting system for ship and station components. The game boasts three resource types: metal, plasma, and gas. Metals, as you'd expect, make up modules and weapons, whereas plasma serves as the crafter's source of power. Gas is required for high-performance computer production and for the ubiquitous hyperspace drives. All three resources can be salvaged from space junk as well as procured from successful missions.
How do you put all these parts together to construct the ultimate interstellar interceptor? With blueprints of course, which are found in the wreckage of old starships. Once blueprints have produced a module, they can't be reused. If crafting fails, however, you get to keep the blueprint (but not the resources) and try again. Finally, Black Prophecy's crafting system will feature optional items called constructors. These units are used during the crafting process to enhance success chances or shorten construction time, and may be modified or repaired by players.

Im really looking forward to this game. Im so tired of orc/elf/medieval themed games. Probably why I really liked anarchy online before they ruined it. Anyway, Im hoping this game can start people into making more sci fi themed MMOs, PLEASE.

Sounds a lot like they are borrowing from Eve.

Or the multiplayer resource gathering space games that existed before EVE, like Tradewars.

Seems like Black Prophecy has come from behind and is now winning the race with Jumpgate Evolution. Following the announcement of how much gameplay had been cut from Jumpgate there doesn't appear to be much to set the two apart, except Black Prophecy being F2P.

They are borrowing from Eve, but in any dissimilar fashion in how others borrowed from WOW or Everquest, or whatever else. MMOs are risky business, so it makes sense that if someone does something successful others try to copy that, in this case its Eve.
It is different enough from Eve though so that the two can be easily be differentiated, and it has a lot more things to cater to a casual market, whereas Eve is pretty much a hardcore player's paradise.

I agree with Kingshield that it only makes sense that games borrow successful things from other games. Plus something like crafting is pretty basic anyways. There isn't really too many ways you can really craft besides gathering materials and putting them together. How you gather the materials might differ slightly but it's still the same idea basically. So if BP borrowed something from Eve, oh well. Black Prophecy is different enough with the game play that will make people want to check it out. I tried getting into Eve but couldn't because of the rts way of playing the game. I wanted to be able to actually fly the ship instead of just clicking and telling my ship to attack something. This is why I can't wait to try out Black Prophecy. The modular ship building looks really interesting as well.
And yes, more sci-fi mmo's, enough elves and knights haha!

Yes, I'm also looking forward to this game.
For all the reasons listed above and more.

Hopefully it will be a decent alternative to Eve and not just another fail MMO like we've been having the last 3 years or so.

I dunno, if they made an EVE that was less tedious it would probably do very well.
