Today we have more from the question-and-answer portion of the DC Universe Online panel at the San Diego Comic-Con last week. (Part one of the panel was posted earlier this week.) Panelists included Creative Director Jens Andersen, Game Director Chris Cao, legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee, and the voice of the Joker, Mark Hamill.
Will there be a mechanic for switching from hero to villain or vice versa?
No. You make the choice of hero or villain at character creation, and it can't be changed after that. This is so it is clear to other players in PvP who is on what team.
Will current storylines in the DC comic universe affect the MMO?
The game will launch "pristine"; that is, the DC Universe in the game will be the popular, well-known one. Wonder Woman will be in her classic costume; Bruce Wayne will be Batman; etc. From there, storylines from the comics may start altering the MMO universe, but at least from the get-go, the game will start with a clean slate.
DCUO will be getting its own bi-weekly comic as well.
What places other than Metropolis/Gotham city will we see in the game?
Iconic places will be playable -- such as Arkham Asylum, where you can let people out of their confinement, and those NPCs could then help you or hurt you. Ace Chemicals will also be there, and in that place you can hit people with a bat for funny effects. Even further out, Smallville is in the works, where Lex Luthor and Doomsday will be up to no good.
Plans also inlcude a playable area on the moon, a volcano with angry, intelligent albino gorillas, and the mysterious Area 51. In the last one, Brainiac is on the attack. Other well-known characters will show up in these areas. The Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy were mentioned for Arkham Asylum, and Sinestro along with the Green Lantern cops at Ace Chemicals.
Not all of the locations for adventure can be found on a map. One of the coolest adventures they talked about sends you inside Raven's mind to fight her tormented-soul-self. The other Teen Titans join you to help bring their teammate back from the brink.
How many characters will each player get per account?
Not announced, but enough to explore both hero and villain storylines.
Can you have a Sith Lord character?
Technically, yes. The character generator is advanced enough for you to get pretty close when trying to create popular characters from other universes. However, what Lucasfilms' lawyers think about that question is another matter...
And with that, the panel was over. They showed the Blur cinematic video Who Do You Trust? one more time; all the panelists posed for pictures; and everyone in attendance was given a code to get into the upcoming beta. I'm pretty sure I saw quite a few of them at the DCUO demo stations on the show room floor trying out the new Play as an Iconic game feature that was just announced.

Wait, so if I'm reading that right, there are only going to be two zones in the game at launch?
Posted: Aug 1st 2010 5:29PM (Unverified) said
No, they're going to have two cities at launch with a variety of areas within those cities. City of Heroes, for example, only has one city, but plenty of zones.
My main concern are all the unconnected areas they're throwing around -- the volacano, area 51, etc. These aren't in either of the cities, so what, we click on a transport terminal and zone to the adventure area? It's effective, but horrible for any sense of "world". I don't like zones that exist in secluded boxes away from the rest of the game.

So is it then a break of real-world immersion to board an airplane to fly from New York to Los Angeles, as opposed to spending four days driving?
At least with a game you get to avoid the five hours in the air (and probably a 2 hour layover somewhere). Not all super heroes have Superman-fast travel capabilities. Even Bruce Wayne has to travel by some sort of vehicle. And even if the game developers DID want to let you travel cross-country like that, this means that they would have to spend about a decade building out the global map and populating it. Like that's really going to happen.
It really comes down to two choices:
A) They put in diverse regions to travel to, spicing up game play but requiring some kind of zoning/transportation mechanism.
B) They have just one big environment that you're stuck in, with no opportunities for things like traveling to space or even other cities.
For my part, I'll take option A any day.

I view a full large scale world in a MMO as a negative.
Too much dead space usually. Too much travel. Takes too long to find everything.

Ah yes, but will I be able to subscribe to and read new comics in the game through DC's new digital distrobution system?

Yeah DC is missing an opportunity it's taken CoX six years to impliment...
Maybe you guys should think a little further out of the box. The question likely wasn't asked if people could change back and forth on the spot. It was probably asked if they could change later on, letting their hero become a villain or the other way around through a quest or faction change.
Let's stop assuming the worst from snippets we get from panels.

Anyone hear if your characters name will stay unique, or will there be duplicates. for example, if I made a character called "Broccoli Guy" (and yes...eww) is it possible that I will see some other "Broccoli Guy" in the DC MMO?
Just wondering if anyone's heard.

Names will be unique per server. That has been covered previously by a dev response on a fan site.

So it sounds like servers will be set up in more or less a 'traditional' fashion, which is a disappointment to me. It's one of the most annoying things about playing WoW - but perhaps with a smaller playerbase it's not so much of an issue.

DCUO cities are very large. Watch previous year convention vidoes. Its big and seamless.
Its in line with the comics to disperse JLA and LOD members to different parts of the world using transports and teleportation devices. So being in varied location falls in line with the comic.
The devs answered changing factions before...PvP is not the reason given. One aspect of the game is there is a story you follow as you play by doing missions assigned by your mentor.(Missions come from different sources but these are story based). It wouldn't make sense for you to be allied with lex doing badder than bad, hit your level cap then show up on Superman's doorstep and have his 100% trust. It would make less sense to make you start over doing level 1 missions when you're at cap. So maybe in the future, who knows. Also, I don't think DC likes changing factions. There are other reasons they have given but you dig em out...I'm done.
Only cryptic uses non-unique names...and so few people play that game, "John Smith" is unique.

Tempes you mention a morality system and a flexible/organic story line and even player driven stories.
These are all things more associated with a MMORPG. Not really so much for a MMO action hybrid like DCUO.
If all the complexity and convolution were added to the game, then DCUO would likely lose it's target audience of more casual, simple, jump in an play type action players.

@Tempes...I personally think Respecs and Faction changes just ruin games. I didn't like people changing factions every few days in EQ2...know a guy who changed twice in one day. And I hate CO's respec 10 times in one day crap because you can't beat a boss. Ick.
Also devs said its a failure on their part if they put out a game where you find creating an alt to not be fun.(Did I say that right?) So that was a promising statement.

I think the simpler choice of front of good or bad is better than a long convoluted process of morality choices.
It lets you just get things set up and then start playing.

I like that there's no side switching. I was a longtime opponent of the feature on the CoH forums, but the feature is getting added so I like that DCUO isn't doing the same thing.
And look at those zones DCUO is going to have: Area 51, a volcano lair and even a moon zone. Meanwhile CoH is adding yet another cityscape and more sewers (as pretty as they are, there's a definite lack of innovation there and it's a big lost opportunity to do something new and sexy).

Yeah, I pretty much ignored anything you said as soon you started to justify yet another cityscape. Still buying GR as I still have a few months sub left but definitely will give DCUO a try. It looks to have many features I wish CoH had even minus side-switching which I never cared for in the first place.

The "morality system" in CoH needs a whole explansion dedicated to it, its not something that can just be added on in a few days - dont you think that designing, developing, coding and implementing a whole game from scratch is difficult enough? Priority should go to making a good game (with the possibility of extra content later on) rather than squeezing as many features in as possible at launch, not to mention it doesnt really fit into their long term story of everyone on the planet (regardless of side) needing to fight against a common enemy to save the future!

Actually from the interview, I wouldn't call those zones, I'd call them instances.
Which CO and COH already does.
So no, Daemondand doesn't have that right.
