Populations are not relevant. Companies=\=population. The US and japan have the moat game "makers".

Magma do you listen to yourself? do you have any idea how many game companies are in china?

Most if not all f2p mmos come from china, i never once spoke of populations im talking about game companies.

Im really sorry you dont have a world view, you should really read the news.

The world does not revolve around you or me nor this nation. You are basically telling me at this point that the US and japan controls all gaming. We dont, and if you cant see that then there is something wrong about your thought process.

There must be something wrong with your thought process, because we sure do control most. When is the last time you had a game come to the US or Japan from some other country? Yeah, almost never. Nothing recent even comes to mind. Making shit tons of crappy grind MMOs hardly qualifies as making you a "gaming behemoth".

FFXIV is really a mystery to me. It seems both way out there and behind the times. Not surprising since FFXI still to this day has systems that are virtually unparalleled in depth, and some systems that felt antiquated when it launched. Don't get me wrong. I loved FFXI for a year, hated for a month, then quit. The game has some very high points. But I won't try FFXIV until some in depth reviews come out. If FFXIV can capture the depth of FFXI, create a community as rich (if often childish and divided), and somehow be accessible and non-grindy, maybe I'll play.

Some things that I consider "innovative" and/or "unique" about FFXIV:

1) Armory system. This is the class system, whereby changing your weapon or tool you become, instantly, a different class. All spells/abilities you earn are set into an overall pool and from that pool you can pick and choose what abilities to set for yourself, regardless of class. There are few restrictions, with the major one being that if you set a weapon skill, say for spears but you're using hand-to-hand weapons to level Pugilist, you can't use the spear skill.

2) Crafting. I can't be specific because there is little publicly released info on FFXIV crafting.

3) Combat. There are official videos of the combat and from that you can tell it's a bit different than your average WoW style game. There's a stamina bar that constantly fills and basically determines the rate at which you can attack, depending on what skill you're using (weaker skills use less stamina, for example). Also, it's evident that auto-attack is completely gone, which in itself is sort of a revolutionary thing!

There are a few other things I'd like to say, but can't. I'd just say that if you're less and less interesting in WoW formula games, even good ones, then keep an eye on FFXIV.

FFXIV's story is pretty damn neat so far from the beta. The story is seperate from the guildleve system. They're called "Class quests", where as your typical "go kill 10 dodos" are "Regional Quests". There's also "Local quests", which I'm assuming are your around-the-town stuff.

I think that the game is gonna be awesome because think about it it's an mmoRPG!
Who better to make an RPG than Square-Enix, the maker's of world renowned RPG Final Fantasy? It all adds up!

(Following is a view on WoW's flaws and the industry and why you shouldn't complain about FFXIV being a grind)

Really? See... in my opinion, WoW is heavily flawed and not worth playing. If it switched to a FTP model like EQ2 when its numbers really drop, I wouldn't be surprised at all. (Why I think its bad before I get flamed for not giving explanation: I am not one of the throngs who think that you have to put in MASSIVE amounts of time to get *minor* upgrades. The value:time ratio is not worth it, and I played through till 80, and regretted the time I played it. The graphics are overly cartoony, and the only real storyline I've seen has only been in this past expansion. If I wanted the story before that, I'd just replay WC3.) But it's popular because it hit the market at the *right* time and had the history of the RTS games behind it. It DID give a whole plethora of innovations (I know, I know, most 'innovations' were stolen, but they polished them up nicely), and set the standard for the industry.

You said "only bad games that can't compete with WoW are going free-to-play". Not true. I've played GW and LotRO and others... by far not "bad" games. EQ2 has been around LONGER than WoW and has had its ebbs and flows, LotRO is also healthy coming out with expansions, etc. They're deciding to play and compete in a different market than WoW. You want to pay a sub, you can play these games, you don't want to be locked down in a sub, you can play these Flex pay ones instead...

But as I'm an MMO veteran, I've become a bit more snobby about which games I give my money to. WoW I see as being the same stuff wrapped in a different package with the new expansion... I feel screwed over from playing since release, so to go back to the same is not worth it now.

FFXIV looks decent because the new graphics upgrade coupled with the legacy that is FF. Everyone here says "grind". What MMO isn't "grind"? Its either grind questing or grind mobs for xp... but thats the way THEY ALL are, ALL RPGS. The only difference is in how they go about doing it, the graphics, and the storyline attached to it.

I'm sure FFXIV is a grind... but it has great graphics, the FF legacy behind it, and probably a great storyline. At that point, why complain about the grind... the grind IS the industry and isn't going anywhere. Its like loving pizza, but hating the dough. Cheese - graphics, sauce - storyline, dough - gameplay through mobs and quests (toppings could be extra features... like grouping, economy, etc). Thats an MMO. WoW didn't invent it. Just improved it.

SW:TOR looks good, but looks like mobs and quests... decent individual story looks good. So does FFXIV. The only real different one I see coming out is GW2. Thats going to drop like a bomb. Quests become dynamic, storyline is personal, varied and diverse, graphics will be amazing, grouping is encouraged (finally), and pricing will be along GW1's buy the box and play free with luxury micros... awesome.

Nice one Mike!

From what little I've played so far its evident SE are keeping the story tightly under wraps. There's very little indication of what's going on and the devs are doing a good job keeping the testers in dark (as far as the story goes).

For me, the game feels a lot different to anything I've tried since GW. It approaches the genre from a different angle to what's currently available looks to provide a complex world to interact with.
