"It promises a fair exercise in treating the world as an actual world rather than simply a collection of monsters to kill on the way to max level."

Clarify this, please. Where has it been stated that this is to be the case?

A good story? So far all the info I see points to crystals giving you quests to go kill ten rats....sounds borning to me.

Looks like all the quests are given by crystals, maybe not, but from all info it looks like you go to crystal, get quest, kill ten rats then repeat.

I'm new to FF so going into it with no expectations but so far the game does not seem deep, storywise, to me at all.

If it's anything like FFXI then a story will be in the Quests and Missions.

That killing rats thing sounds like more of a way to level and make gil, kinda like in FFXII where you can get payed to hunt notorious monsters.

Yes, it will definitely have a huge story arc just like FFXI... likely with the main character being a teenage npc with an attitude.

As a beta tester, I can't go into much detail, but I can say a few things about how quests work (mostly because they've already been announced). Essentially, the quests come from a central location, in the form of guildleves. These quests send you to a variety of locations, where the crystals are, which then act as a questing hub.

There is an overarching story, and you get into it faster than in FFXI, which is nice. The questing is well set up, and the gameplay is fairly straightforward. Those with consoles or a powerful enough rig will likely have a blast.

I'm deeply wary of FF14, due mostly to FF11 fans.

Square-Enix could claim all they want about how the game is changed so the game will appeal even to people who never tried a MMO before. However, all I see are excited FF11 fans defending every small bit of FF14 because "that's how it was done in FF11 and that's the way we like it". No wonder it's such a common opinion that FF14 is a rehash of FF11 with new graphics.

Hopefully, there will be an open beta, so I can give the game a try. If there isn't any, then I guess I'll wait for a review. It's a good thing my video card should be able to run it, because there's no way I'll buy a new card for a game I don't even know if it's any good.

This. When I asked on a forum what it is that made this game at all innovative, the only answer I got was "lot's of things."

The person in question never clarified, and all the answers given in this article are incredibly vague.

So outside of the levies, which seem to have a cooldown, what exactly is there to do in order to level besides grind? I am not hearing anything...

Is there story anywhere? These levies sound like grind quests, that's it. So far the game is sounding like a beautiful but incredibly shallow piece of work.

Someone tell me I am wrong and why, because I would really love to know.

Nobody can really say because SE keeps everything under a lid except for what they have said so far and what has been leaked. And according to those leaks even the beta testers only have a small portion of the game.

So to those who are unsure I say wait until after release, because no one can really give you an accurate picture, not even the testers who while may have a better idea, it's not complete.

Wish I could tell you that you are wrong friend but all signs point to epic grind :( Not touching this until review or open beta.

Is it Turn-Based combat or is it proper MMORPG style, like turn based but not so quite?

Also is there a way that you might be able persuade Square-Enix to possibly not use the traditional MMO subscription and have it free-to-play? Everybody's doing it! Turbine,Ncsoft, everybody!

Only bad games that can't compete with WoW are going free to play.
Most of them are WoW clones too.

FFXIV will not have this problem.

I would like FFXI to go F2P though. I hope it never dies.

After reading most of these comments i have realized two things:

1) Americans think they control the market and are the only gaming population on the planet.

2) Think they can influence square into doing what they want them to do instead of their design goal.

Makes me sad to be american imo. All this "ive seen x if you dont change this NOW, im not going to play" stuff accomplishes nothing and do realize there are only going to be worldwide servers. Not localized like aion is.

America has as much say as everybody else. And sometimes you arnt going to get your way.

Deal with it. Play if you want , dont like it? this isnt wow go back to playing it plz.

While you guys cry on sept 30 about having nothing to do ill be gladly playing 14 with whatever controls or content they give me.

BE greatful is the moral of the story here.

Not seeing where people are demanding changes here, just curious about any depth beyond grinding and how the story will play out.

I know I have not played a Final Fantasy game since 7, so I am a bit out of touch with the series and have NO idea how FFXI runs as an MMO. I hear people talking about grinding and grouping to level up, but I don't hear anything about storyline quests or anything of the like, even though people say there will be a rich world.

To me, a rich world has a lot of story, I am curious about how this is presented to the player. Is it through quests? Do we get cutscenes of a group not our own? Is there no story at all besides the one we make in our minds?

I can deal with grinding as long as there is some story to go along. I can also deal with poor controls, though it would be nice to have them be a bit more fluid and suited for keyboard/mouse setups...but oh well.

"...Deal with it. Play if you want , dont like it? this isnt wow go back to playing it plz..."

Relgoth, you lost all credibility when you made that statement.

You also lost all credibility when you try to imply that Americans are any different than anyone else when it comes to having an opinion. Your ignorance shows.

WoW is the most successful MMO in the world for a reason and it's not because of old school grind mechanics like what we are likely to find in FFXIV.

Uh, no. We don't think we control most of the market, we DO control a huge portion of it. Us, Japan, who else? Thought so. I plan on playing 14 at launch but don't try to act like we have no stake in gaming companies.

ffxi had rich story
each of the 3 starting city had its own storyline and all 3 merge toward the end
and each expansion had its story arc.
main story quests had their own category in the game and doing them unlock zones , endgame events and gear.
CSs used to tell the story but its completely voiceless which will change in 14 where main story line will be voiced.
here a music video of 3rd expansion CSs ( the start from KH game)

@Magma:

Yeah, you're speaking out of ignorance if you don't know that China, Japan, and Korea (aka "Asia") represent a much larger piece of the MMO pie than the USA. Who do you think contributed the most to Blizzard their much flaunted "11 million" subscribers? Hint: it wasn't America's 4 million.

So Relgoth pretty much hit the nail on the head.
